Older horses are frequently donated to rescues. Often they are deemed unrideable in their older years and usually for good reasons. However, they can still bring so much to our lives! Caring for them in their later years we have found is immensely meaningful as we show them gratitude for all the years they have so willingly given to people. In our eyes it is the best way to thank them, taking great care of them as they age in their final years. They also make wonderful companions for younger horses!

This is me, Joanna, at age 14 in Berchtesgaden, Germany on my Haflinger pony named Carmen. ❤️ I owned her for 3 years in my childhood. That was one of the last pictures I took with her as we had to sell her and move back to the United States later that summer. Bringing her with us was not an affordable option. This mare was amazing! We had an incredible bond of trust and care for each other. She was one of my best childhood friends. It was a rare opportunity for an American child to own a horse in Europe for sure. I think it was a trajectory part of my life that God had planned for me and for what I do now with this rescue. Carmen was one of a few horses in my life that laid a beautiful foundation of relationship with them. I will always be grateful to her and the love and trust she offered me.

We’re so thankful for our first ever foster homes that have enabled us to help these 2 horses (Blue & Marco) and one donkey (Matilda) who were owner surrendered to us. This has been a need of Rescue Rio for some time and we’re so thrilled about the wonderful people who have come alongside us to help support them in their rehab process! Our foster families always have first option to adopt while the horses (and donkey) go through their rehabilitation time. Please always contact us for more horses available for adoption!

The end of the school year Mom To Do List took priority over the last week! ❤️ Looking forward to lots of kid+pony time for the next 10 weeks! Praying for us all to thrive! It’s already hitting 90° every day! ☀️🤪☀️
