Horizon is a non-profit that empowers vulnerable children & youth. Text HORIZONHELPS to 243-725.
Horizon is a global organization focused on empowering orphaned children to self-sustainability. By putting family first, we help each child develop a true sense of identity and belonging, while our focus on Impact Investing bolsters local economies and creates income to support our in-country operations.
Return with us, to Horizon Empowers’ African-soil roots as we remember the stories, the heart and the mission that drew us all in. Experience again the call that brought us together. This year’s event will be both intentional and simple, as we turn our focus towards the amazing children and youth we serve, while raising awareness and donations that supports them with empowerment and sustainability. What is Horizon Empowers all about?
We offer many programs and services to children, youth and families in Kenya and Latin America. But it all boils down to these three things.

Meet Janelle: Horizon’s fundraising consultant!
Janelle has a heart for mission-driven work, especially among vulnerable populations that are less likely to receive support.
“I have a passion for seeing individuals healed and restored from trauma. I have worked in multiple capacities, mentoring and advocating for young women. Now, I have the privilege of advocating for orphaned children, seeing them whole and restored with a newfound hope. The scripture that speaks to me is James 1:27: ’The religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.’ God has laid on my heart a burden to help those who need someone to come alongside them and remind them of their worth and value.”
Janelle was born and raised in Lancaster. She and her husband Terry have three children and a newborn grandchild! In her free time, Janelle loves to travel with her husband and host friends and family in their home.
What if you could change the world with...your spare change?
We’re on a mission to empower orphaned and vulnerable children and youth to self-sustainability. That work can only happen when people like you show up with what you have, and join with many others who are doing the same.
So yes -- we may not have much individually. But when we all come together, there’s no telling what might happen.

Empowerment looks like...home.
Children and youth in Horizon care live in safe housing with loving caregivers. But when they leave our temporary housing for permanent placements, our support doesn’t stop — we continue case management and monitoring to make sure these children and their families are living in safe, well-functioning homes.
You can help provide housing services to children and youth in our care! Check out the link in our bio to give today.

If we forget about cultural sensitivity, international humanitarian work can go wrong really quickly.
Being culturally sensitive means that the places and people we serve inform the work we do — not the other way around. Horizon strives to operate in ways that are relevant and sensitive to local cultural values and customs. When we forge positive ties with local communities and governments, we do better work.
Visit our website to learn more about how cultural sensitivity works in our locations in Kenya & Latin America!

Horizon empowers families for life. That means self-sustainability is essential.
A sustainable, dignified income strengthens families and their ability to care for one another. When we reunify a family, we work with local partners to ensure that family is integrated into their community with opportunities for livelihood.

There is hope for the child...
in a broken home.
in poverty.
robbed of their rights.
We’re in the business of restoring that hope.
Just as there is hope for the tree that is cut down, there is hope for every child. They, too, can come back to life and sprout again.
Children were made to dwell in safety — but for millions, it isn’t a reality.
That’s why we provide a Temporary Safe Place for children in our care. These are spaces where kids and youth can live with loving caregivers and experience holistic health restoration, while we work with professionals to determine their best long-term family placement.

Sometimes it’s the little things.
A bed with fresh blankets.
A meal prepared with love.
A football match with friends.
We never know what moments will make an impact in a child’s life. But to hear them say, “I am happy. I belong” ... well, what more could we ask for?

Seventy new children entered our programs last year. They found a safe place to rest, consistent, healthy meals and other medical provisions, and counseling. They've been given a seat in the classroom and all their school supplies. They have received mentorship and training to plan for their futures.
This is what real, life-changing care looks like. The truth is, it takes real people and real money to pull it off. Are you one of those people yet?
As we celebrate 20 years, we invite you to lean in and give $20 a month to empower children and youth to self-sustainability! Click the link in our bio to start making real change today.
More than half the world’s population doesn’t have full access to health services. If you’re thinking, “it shouldn’t be this way...”
Yeah. We agree. Want to do something about it with us?
We provide essential health and nutrition services to all children and youth within our care, like access to medical care and treatments, personal hygiene supplies, a nutritious diet, and more.
Today is World Health Day — would you consider giving $20 to support these services for orphaned and vulnerable children?

Digital literacy, along with access to technology, is increasingly vital in our world. Children and youth growing up without these things face additional difficulty navigating the job market, career opportunities and more. Even children who have access to technology, but lack knowledge of how to best utilize it, experience challenges.
This unequal access to digital technology is known as the digital divide. Africa experiences more inequality from the digital divide than any other continent: only 43% of the population were internet users in 2021, compared to 93% of North Americans.
Digital literacy is a key to education — something all children have a right to. You can join us in equipping vulnerable children and youth with education access by donating today. Check out the link in our bio to learn more!
We partner with local governments and other like-minded organizations to multiply our impact. That means more services, for more children — sounds like a no-brainer, right?
Our latest partner, Bata Shoes, recently presented Horizon with 324 pairs of shoes for all school-age children in our care in Kenya! These shoes will complete the children’s school uniforms, allowing them to attend school dressed for success.
Lavender Owako, a spokesperson for Bata, shared: “We know that shoes are not just a fashion statement. Shoes can make a change of self-esteem they need to propel them into education, to help them have a better future.”
We’re looking for more partners to link arms with us in the mission to empower children and restore their rights. Whether it’s providing clothing, housing, a special skill or other opportunity, we love to think creatively about how we could work together.

Alice is known as Mama to many children, both biological and “heart -adopted.” Working as a caregiver at Horizon for the past 16 years has allowed her to invest time in her own children’s lives alongside the children she cares for at Horizon.
You can empower Alice and other caregivers like her by donating monthly to support the many services they provide to children and youth in Horizon care.! Click the link in our bio today.
If we want to empower children, there’s one question we must ask:
What is their best interest?
No two children are the same — so why would we care for them all the same? We know children have different needs based on their life circumstances, so a team of professionals works with each person in our care to determine and advocate for their best interest — from onboarding to long-term placement in a healthy family.
Give today to provide these professional services to children and youth in our care! Just click the link in our bio.
When Esther received her cancer diagnosis, she thought everything was over — until her community surrounded her with support and empowered her to keep going.
We're all about empowering children here at Horizon — but we can only do that when we ourselves are empowered. No one knows this like Esther, a social worker who has been with Horizon for the past 14 years. Esther’s personal story of empowerment in the midst of her pain has allowed her to support many children and youth in their own times of need.

Milkah has been a mother to many since Horizon’s earliest days. She has seen girls grow into strong women, and shares her wisdom in what really matters when raising the next generation.
You can empower caregivers like Milkah to continue providing love and care to children who desperately need it. Your support provides for physical needs, educational fees, mentorship, and much more to children and youth in our programs. Give today at the link in our bio!
