Pa. Human Relations Commission visits Lancaster to build grassroots support, local connections - One United Lancaster The "Beloved Community Tour" aims to visit all 67 counties by next June.
( ): Sixty years ago, on July 19, 1963, the Lancaster Chapter of the NAACP staged a peaceful demonstration to protest discriminatory hiring practices at local department stores. The demonstration focused primarily on Watt and Shand on Penn Square and Hagers, seen here, on West King Street. Specifically, protests surrounded the lack of white-collar jobs available to Black citizens, like positions as sales clerks. The protests ended when Hager's promised "good faith in hiring processes." The chapter considered the demonstrations a success. This year, Lancaster's NAACP chapter celebrates its 100th anniversary. 🎊 (📸 Heritage Center Museum Collections, LancasterHistory)
