do1thing Business Emergency Preparedness Edition!
According to FEMA, 25% of businesses do not open after a disaster. The mission of do1thing Business is to help business and non-profit owners understand what they can do before, during, and after a disaster to improve their chance of financial/operations survival. Let’s talk about COMMUNITY, CUSTOMERS, & SUPPLIERS. The goal is to understand and be prepared to manage the effects of an incident on your customers, suppliers, and outside operations.
Communities, individuals, and businesses will be affected by disaster in a number of ways. Immediate effects include property damage and loss, disruption of services and supply chains, and loss of production time. Long-term effects include demographic and economic shifts in the community, suppliers going out of business, and workers not returning to the workplace.

do1thing emergency preparedness tips for October.
The GOAL for October is to be able to safely meet your basic needs during an electrical outage.
We count on electricity for heat, food, and medical needs. Even gas appliances need electricity to run. A power outage is an emergency that often follows another emergency—like a hurricane, tornado, or storm. That makes it even more important to be prepared in advance.
Tips For Power Outage Safety Include:
⭐️ Discard food if the temperature in your refrigerator exceeds 40 degrees for more than 2 hours.
⭐️ Stay away from downed power lines and anything it is in contact with such as fences or buildings.
⭐️ NEVER drive over downed power lines; they may be energized.
⭐️ NEVER use a generator in an indoor/confined space including basement and garage. You WILL be overcome by carbon monoxide, a deadly gas. Also, charcoal or gas grills may present a toxic hazard including death.
⭐️ If you must use candles, be sure to use them safely. Never leave candles burning unattended.

As we finish up Emergency Preparedness Month, did you and your family take steps to become better prepared? do1thing asked that you make sure you, your family, or community are INFORMED in preparing for, during, or after an emergency/disaster.
✅ Warning sirens may be activated at different times for different reasons, did you contact your local fire department to find out what each siren (time/day) means and when should you take cover?
✅ What other ways will local emergency management personnel warn of dangers?
✅ Did you invest in a NOAA Emergency Alert Radio? These radios can be used to warn about dangerous situations like tornado, hurricane, or chemical spill and in order to take shelter or other safe actions.
✅ Did you develop a plan for those who have challenges in communicating such as assistive hearing devices, hearing impaired/sign language, or non-English speaking. If you think you or someone in your family or neighborhood will struggle with receiving instructions/information, please identify someone to assist before, during, and after a disaster.

do1thing Business Edition:
According to FEMA, 25% of businesses do not open after an emergency disaster. The mission of do1thing is to help business owners understand what they can before, during, and after a disaster to improve their chance of financial/operations survival. Let’s talk about COMMUNICATION. The goal is to develop strategies to communicate to employees, suppliers, and customers during and after an emergency.
Your business relies on good communication during normal operations. Communication is even more critical during/after a disaster or emergency. You must be able to get information about the event and share information with staff, customers, and suppliers. Look at the ways that you communicate on a day-to-day basis and find ways to ensure that you can continue to communicate effectively when your business is affected by disaster.

GOAL FOR August: Make your community stronger by getting trained and getting involved.
It's August and it's important to GET INVOLVED in order to prepare your family and community for an emergency/disaster.
It takes more than police, fire and EMS to respond to a disaster. It takes people who are committed to neighborhoods, schools, churches, and volunteer organizations. When people are willing to work together for the good of others, communities are stronger.
People who are involved are the key to a disaster resilient community. They are willing and able to look out for themselves and others. A resilient community is one that can withstand a disaster and get back to normal quickly (even if normal isn’t the same as it was before).
Remember, community preparedness starts at home. If you know that your family is prepared at home, you will be better able to help others in your community.

It's July! And, at Do1Thing, we focus on your FAMILY'S COMMUNICATION PLAN and your ability to communicate with family members during/after a disaster.
Today, we have more ways to speak with one another than ever before. We are used to staying in touch with cell phones, internet, and email, but disasters change things. These devices may not be available. Cell phone towers quickly become overloaded with people trying to reach friends and family. If the power is out at your home, cordless phones, internet, and email will not work either. Do you have a plan?

It's June and it's important to focus on your UNIQUE FAMILY NEEDS in the event of an emergency.
Every household is different. Is there an infant or young child in your home? Does someone in your family have a medical condition that requires medication? Do you have a pet? Before disaster strikes, talk to your family about your household’s unique needs. Make a list of special items you may need in a disaster.

All month in May, we asked you to make sure you, your family, and those you count on are prepared no matter where you are. Emergencies don’t always happen when everyone is “safe” at home. This month, did you, your family, neighbors:
✅ Locate evacuation routes or shelter locations at work or school?
✅ Ask your employer/school to hold emergency training/drills or provide information on what to do in the case of emergency? Does your college-aged student know what to do?
✅ Pack and emergency kit for the office, school, or car? Did you make one for people who count on you like your parents or neighbors?
✅ Make a plan to ensure your pets/animals are safe by designating a neighbor/friend in the event you cannot make it home?
✅ Discuss any plans with local law enforcement/fire/emergency management?
