Participate in a Research Study on the Prevalence and Predictors of Burnout in Optometrists
As a doctoral candidate in the Department of Psychology at Liberty University, Jeffrey Weaver, OD, MBA, MS is conducting research on burnout in optometry as part of the requirements for his Ph.D. degree. The purpose of his research is to determine the prevalence of burnout in the profession of optometry in the United States and to explore if practice type and workload are predictors of burnout in optometrists. Dr. Weaver is asking MOA members to join the study.
As an incentive to participate Dr. Weaver is offering the opportunity for participants to be entered in a drawing to receive a $500 gift card or one of five $100 gift cards.

Calling for AOA doctor, patient testimonials
The AOA is calling for doctors and patients to share their impactful, and oftentimes life-changing, stories where an AOA doctor was the first stop in their journey to an eye-related or other diagnosis and treatment.
Personal stories are one of the most impactful tools we have when it comes to encouraging others to seek care and prioritize their health. Real-life examples combined with expert commentary allow the conditions being highlighted to be humanized and help consumers understand the value of regular eye care.
Do you have an inspiring story around:
• Screen time, gaming or computer vision syndrome
• Patients with glaucoma
• Chronic dry eye patients
• Myopic patients
We’d love to hear from you. Submit your stories here: https://ow.ly/x5VV50SSeGk
August is National Children’s Vision & Learning Month. The goal of this national observance is to help educate parents, guardians, and educators about the critical link between vision and learning.
Vision problems are the fourth most prevalent class of disability in the United States and one of the most prevalent conditions in childhood. Roughly 80 percent of what a child learns in school is information that is presented visually. Vision problems can have a profound effect on how children learn.

Governor Executive Order Adds Optometrist Seat to MBO
On July 16, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that she signed an executive order reorganizing Michigan’s boards, councils, and committees. The order builds on the governor’s commitment to cutting red tape and streamlining government. The order will work to minimize overlap and redundancy in 26 of the more than 250 boards that currently serve Michigan, including the Michigan Board of Optometry. Many boards no longer serve their original purpose, with some having fulfilled their purpose, unnecessarily expanded their scope, or duplicated the work of other boards. Under the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, a substantive change to the Michigan Board of Optometry would order the removal of one general public seat that had expired on the Michigan Board of Optometry and will replace the seat with an optometrist, increasing the professional representation of this board.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released its once-per-decade update to the federal government’s eyeglass sales requirements (known as the “FTC Eyeglass Rule”). Noting 10 years of advocacy and active efforts seeking to moderate the agency’s harsh approach toward small and mid-sized health care practices, the AOA issued an analysis of the rule changes and pointed to two harmful proposals that now have been officially abandoned by the agency.
To ease the practice burdens connected to the FTC’s rule update, the AOA announced that it will be providing member doctors with compliance tools before the rule is enforced. The AOA will also continue its work with the FTC and other federal enforcement agencies to spur a crackdown on illegal medical device sales and internet scams.
