Rubin Center - CArtography
Recently the gallery was asked to participate in the Cartography Exhibit at the Stanley & Gerald Rubin Center on the campus of the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). Here is a link to the center's website where videos of many of the participating galleries have been posted: http://rubin.utep.edu/index.php/current1/114. The videos are also being posted on Facebook.
The objective of the exhibit is to call attention to the breadth and depth of contemporary art in our borderland region. Kerry A. Doyle, Director of the Rubin Center, plans to continue this initial conversation through additional initiatives and collaborations as a way to grow awareness of contemporary art throughout our area.
P.S. (Please excuse my "shameless" request to like Unsettled Gallery . . . as well as the other featured galleries!)đ

The Delacroix Masterpiece That Unites Picasso, Lichtenstein, and José Dåvila
Do I have some kind of reputation for posting l-o-o-o-o-o-n-g articles? This one gives me real street cred. It is a long, but an informative and well-written article about the current Jose DĂĄvila exhibit "Femme dâAlger" a series of 13 works inspired by Roy Lichtenstein's "Femme d'Alger" (Pop; 1 artwork) which was an interpretation of Picasso's "Femme dâAlger" (Cubism; series of 15 works) -- that in turn was inspired by the Delacroix Femme dâAlger, (French Romanticism; 2 works, the first version completed in 1834 and the second between 1847 and â49). DĂĄvila series incorporates a technique he began developing in 2008. Using photographs, he cuts out elements of a fully developed work and continues until only an outline remains. For a viewer, you can often see overlooked elements and perspectives, when comparing the excised to the whole, leading to a better understanding and appreciation of all works. The author of the article, Abigail Cain, explains and demonstrates with images, the inspiration trail and the effect of DĂĄvila's technique as his excises progress.
artsy.net Delacroixâs âFemmes dâAlger dans leur appartementâ (1834) has inspired Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and now, Jose DĂĄvila.

Each color selected for use in one her compositions enhances its companions and presents an artwork that is truly a feast for viewers' eyes. Prepare to be wowed.
Jacklyn St. Aubyn returns to Las Cruces for her exhibit "Petit Fours" opening with a reception on Saturday, October 8; 4 to 6 PM. This exhibit features smaller works. Regardless of size, each piece St. Aubyn creates is masterfully composed and meticulously painted.

Here is an image of artwork included in Rie Palkovic's exhibit "Between Shadow and Space . . ." The artworks, for the most part, utilize a darker palette with lighter accents to call attention to different areas of the image. Palkovic's skill in using her palette results in a bold composition that works as a focal point on your wall. And in this post, we've included advance notice of the exhibit that will hang in the gallery from September 10 through October 1. The exhibit features the work of Tauna Cole (Tauna M. Cole-Dorn) and Raul Dorn. Mark your calendars to "save the date."

Up Close, Artist Chuck Close Seems to Be Crumbling; From Far Away, His Work Is As Sharp As Ever
Other sources have been posting about this article on FB. The full-length article can be found on the New York Times website. Possibly it was written for the NYT Sunday magazine, though I find it strange that it would go up on the website so soon. The full article is well worth reading. Wil Hylton, a long-time friend and art writer, covers--in summary--Close's body of work tracing the connections between one period of investigation to the next. At the same time he has, for the most part, sensitively written about Close's early years and his declining health and how this current work, as Close faces increasingly significant health-related issues, is most probably his very best. On the NYT website, the resolution of the image below is so much higher and thus resoundingly powerful. Definitely worth the time to read in full.

The seven ages of an artist
This post came to my attention today from a post by Las Cruces artist Jacklyn St Aubyn. The article by Laura Cu***ng summarizes the career paths of many famous artists focusing on identifying when, it is generally agreed, their most recognized (i.e., they achieved gallery and collector recognition) period occurred. The article mentions several artists who were recognized even though their lives were foreshortened. Following the article--and not to be missed--are interviews with several artists (not only those widely known) and their thoughts about how they deal with being "true" to their art versus being "recognized" by the public. Each is a very thoughtful commentary. I've read as many as time permitted today, but will be returning to the article and interviews many times. CSB

Join us for what is sure to be an informative artist's painting demo on Saturday, May 21 from 1 to 3 PM. Megan Lemcke, one of the artists featured in the Black Range Artists' Exhibit, "Visions Of The Black Range", will demonstrate and talk about her painting process. Sadly, Hobbette, her studio muse, will not be able to join us. The image below summarizes Megan's painting practice.
An example of Joan Mitchell's art, mentioned in another post on the gallery's page. Why does it seem that when you are thinking of one thing, Joan Mitchell's work, for example, suddenly you encounter it or a close relationship everywhere?
This post was shared by Jeanne Bennett Rundell, who is the best art curator.

'Joan Mitchell is a painter who hates esthetic labels. She agrees with Harry Holtzman that âthe hardening of the categories causes art disease.â She finds particularly distasteful moral insinuations concerning âgoodâ versus âbadâ criteria, and insists that âthere is no one way to paint; there is no single answer.â ' (Irving Sandler, © Artnews LLC.)
