Khac was admitted to Kindred Hospital Las Vegas Flamingo on June 15th after an acute care hospital stay for hypoxic respiratory failure, requiring intubation and ventilation. Khac also had a gastrostomy tube placed for his nutritional needs. After a prolonged hospital stay, Khac did improve and was able to be transferred to Kindred Hospital Flamingo for continuation of ventilator weaning, antibiotic therapy and medical management.

At admission, Khac could open his eyes, respond appropriately, follow simple commands, and move all extremities. Translation services were necessary as Khac recently came to the United States and does not speak English. Both his wife and daughter were present and very supportive with the daughter assisting with translations for her parents.

During his stay at Kindred, Khac was seen and treated by an interdisciplinary team including neurology, infectious disease, psychiatry, cardiology and pulmonology. In addition, Khac was treated by Kindred’s interdisciplinary clinical team of nursing, rehab services, respiratory care, and nutrition. Throughout his stay, Khac’s trach was capped and then removed. Khac was maximum assistance during the initial period of rehab therapy but started to improve and is currently going to the gym for therapy and is walking with assistance. Khac has slowly increased his oral intake and is currently eating his meals with chopsticks brought from home by his wife.

With Khac’s ongoing improvement, he is being transferred to a skilled nursing facility to continue his recovery.

Battling deep-seated prejudice against women and Black Americans in medicine, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, became the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1864. After graduating from the New England Female Medical College, she treated Civil War refugees before becoming the first Black person to publish a medical book, focusing on best practices for good health for women and children. Congratulations to Kindred Hospital Las Vegas - Flamingo on its official grand opening of the new Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU) on August 17. The 12-bed ARU, which complements the existing long-term acute care hospital, includes a new gym with state-of-the-art equipment used in rehabilitative therapies and features all private rooms for patients’ recovery. This new service enables our facility to provide a broader range of acute-level, physician-led rehabilitation expertise while avoiding the disruption of transferring a patient to a separate facility. Our ARU will accept patients beginning on September 1, 2023.
