The story of Caster Semenya is a fascinating one. Caster was banned from competing professionally due to a transphobic rule.

A cis woman had hormones forced onto her to comply with transphobic rules. So much for feminism ay?

Coming out to those around us can be incredibly difficult, but coming out in a professional environment is a completely different task. We're sharing some tips and advice that could help anyone to come out in the workplace

🏳️‍⚧️ Where to start?- Your first steps can be daunting, so ensure you're ready to come out. A great place to start could be other LGBTQ+ colleagues, if you work for a larger company maybe there is a group you can reach out to, or anyone that may have bene through something similar.

🏳️‍⚧️ Admin- Depending on where you work and the nature of your job there could be a surprising amount of admin to sort out including employment documents and logins that will need to be transferred. You can always approach your line manager or a trusted colleague ahead of time and confidentially ask what might be expected.

🏳️‍⚧️ Timing- It helps if you can take some time off for these changes to go through and give both you and your colleagues a clean break. If you’re not able to take annual leave, consider sending an email sharing news about your new name and pronouns last thing on Friday, then come in as your best self on Monday morning.

🏳️‍⚧️ What next?- Once you’re settled in, it doesn’t hurt to think about the people who might be coming next. You won’t have been the first person in that situation, and you won’t be the last. Most of all, be yourself. Coming out at work is tricky! But once it’s done you’re out there, and you can get on with your life – your actual life.

You can read more on this topic and get more in depth guidance on our blog about coming out at work, and good luck!!! Good times are ahead ❤️

💜💕💕🥰Seen in downtown Oly today

(edited) Trigger Warning: The comment section includes a wide range of trollish anti-trans, anti-science, and anti-reality posts. Some of them are extremely hateful and mean. So skip reading those if you want.

Thanks to all of the folx who’ve responded to the trolls with science, sincere efforts at education, and sassy sarcasm! We appreciate you and your labor❤️

+big thx to the person who beautified Oly by making and posting this truth all over town: “A world without trans people has never existed and never will”

And of course for Stonewall Youth to keep providing programs by and for q***r youth, we have ongoing financial needs: https://linktr.ee/stonewallyouth?fbclid=IwAR2LPceGFhDoI53zRMeysZfk9ey3ys3ugaXZWBUFdkGiZOCL7jQS-t0VX5Q

(Added even later) Because some people have asked, below are some notes about why the staff collective members who curate Facebook at Stonewall Youth are leaving so many hateful and/or misinformed comments and memes up instead of deleting or "hiding" them (well, most of them. We "hid" some of the worst).

It's a good question, because as an organization dedicated to supporting q***r and trans youth (ages 12-21) to survive and thrive, it may seem hypocritical that our Facebook now hosts a bunch of hateful comments among all of the other great things available here.

Plz note that most of us here at Stonewall think that Facebook really sucks, and there are only two of eight staff collective members who can even stand to look at Facebook no matter what's going on here. This note is written by one of them and definitely doesn't represent the entire organization.

1) If we deleted/hid the hateful comments, then a lot of the amazing responses written by people who were addressing the hateful comments with a mix of science, personal experience, sarcasm, and valiant attempts at education would also be lost or just wouldn't make any sense any more.

So, we let this post and its thousands of comments be just one small example of this current moment of trans history in the U.S.: trans people just trying to exist and live as themselves while also having to deal with the current moment of ignorance, trans panic, transphobia, ridiculous accusations of "grooming" and other types of abuse.

2) We saw it as an opportunity to address hate/ignorance with education, kinda in line with what Justice Brandeis and others have said about "the best remedy to combat harmful speech is more speech." We did enter into the fray with educational and advocacy posts (and a few sarcastic ones) but...well, there's really no way to counter a lot of the posts with good faith efforts at info-sharing, science, and personal experience because many of the harmful posts aren't from people acting in good faith.

Plus, we're only two people. We have a lot of other work to do and need to take care of ourselves.

3) What a great learning experience! We learned from the supportive commenters and are truly grateful for their labor. Thanks for sharing your experience, knowledge, and wit! We already knew most of the anti-trans arguments and strategies, and of course we know all about trolls. 😎But now we know even more about you, and learning about particular people, their strategies, and why they do what they do is always useful.

4) Stonewall is by and for youth ages 12-21. Six of Stonewall Youth's staff collective members are youth. Because we know that not many youth are on Facebook these days (for good reasons!), leaving the hateful posts here isn't as harmful as it would have been when more youth used Facebook in the olden days.

As for why people of any age would want to leave mean, spiteful, blatantly insulting, ridiculously unscientific, ignorant, abusive, and truly hateful comments on a page of a small nonprofit that is "by and for" youth...we don't have an answer for that, and we hope that those people will soon wake up in the dark of the night to experience a dark night of the soul that pushes them to be better people.
