Incorporating universal design principals into your renovation project can be easier than you think, and many of these solutions can be implemented for minimal or no extra expense.
In fact, most of the elements used in universal design are really just standard building components that are either repositioned (such as lowering light switches), chosen more selectively (like faucet handles), or resized (doorways).
With the right planning and preparation — and the help of an experienced interior designer who specializes in universal design — you can ensure that your space is both comfortable and stylish, while also adapting to your family’s changing needs.

Universal design is trending and for good reason! As the baby-boomer generation continues to age, they are increasingly opting to remain at home rather than move to a senior living community.

To meet this demand, interior designers and home builders are using Universal Design to increase the quality of life for people of all ages and abilities.

The carefully curated vibrant hues and contemporary designs of our furniture create an atmosphere that perfectly embodies the vibrant pulse of our city.

These days, we're seeing a shift to multi-generational living, but having multiple generations of the same family living under one roof is not a new idea.

What is new is the way architects and interior designers are re-imagining the home and how it can best support all members of the family, at all stages of life.

From Asia’s centuries-old tradition of multigenerational living to Australia’s emergence as an epicenter for a new expression of multigenerational housing in the Western context, this book shows that through carefully considered design, it’s possible for families to enjoy privacy and togetherness, all under one roof.

I am a big champion of Universal Design and believe that creating homes that are “forever homes” just makes sense — especially today.

David Traut’s book “Age in Place at Home: Adapting the Home Environment for All Generations” is a guide for identifying and fixing the accessibility issues that your home exhibits. Its aim is to inspire and empower you to create a home that supports the family members who need home accessibility the most.

David is a nationally registered Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) with accreditation in Universal Design from the National Association of Home Builders and the Centre for Universal Design Australia.

“Age in Place at Home" is not just another design or architecture book. It will challenge your attitude about establishing home in a common sense way. Why design for “now” when you could design for the future?

With this book, you’ll discover how to adapt almost any existing home environment to overcome difficulties and enable you and everyone else in the family to comfortably live at home safely.

Broken down into two main parts, the book first explains why our current traditional homes have always lacked inclusive accessibility for every family member once life changes occur. Then, the author describes the principles of Universal Design as applied to each room, detailing what makes up a “forever home".

If you know me, you know I am a fan of Corey Damen Jenkins's bold approach to interior design. In his first book, he gives his take on the classics, beautifully reimagined for today's taste.

Bright colors and busy prints aren't the only way to make your space exciting. Never underestimate your furniture’s ability to add personality to your space!

Sofas become pieces of art when their silhouettes and structures are highlighted with turned legs and bun feet. Metal-framed armchairs provide a modern edge to an otherwise traditional living room.

The next time you are furniture shopping, pay special attention to the details including the legs, backs, seats, arms, and feet. Do any of their shapes mimic shapes already present in your space? Do any of the shapes contrast? Considering these details in relation to your home is a great way to broaden your style palate.
