From three layer draperies to Louis XIV commodes, everything was dripping with the turn of the 18th century designs. But, my Vegas clients seem to have a huge appreciation for clean lines, metal, s**g rugs and good ole tub chair designs. Yup, no ball n claw feet in sight here. Since working at the World Market Center for the past 14 yrs. (Hard to believe it's been that long) I've been able to rub elbows with Vladimir Kagan, talk shop with countless manufactures and learn all about the differences in form vs function. So many interiors, so little time. There's just so much to choose from and it's not easy trying to juggle the quest for furniture and interiors with all the other elements of personal lifestyles. Nonetheless, we must either carry on to find the best quality and styles for our most important living spaces or seek out a qualified designer, decorator or your mom :). Get references and ask a lot of questions. But, remember your instincts and let them juices flow because you are your own best judge. Here is a quick guide:
1. Who will be using this space, all needs should be considered depending on individual requirements and the interest level of the other parties.
2. If you know your color scheme, you are 1/2 way there.
3. We never need to match our furniture to our kitchen appliances or cabinets. Have fun, relax and don't stress about the stove, unless you’re a great chef.
4. Flooring is the darkest element, walls are usually a tone and ceilings are a tint, of course there are exceptions to this rule.
5. Study the styles, there are only a few but this can still be a bit of a daunting process for most of us. Schedule a consultation from an experienced furniture trades person or an Interior Designer
6. Designing your interior needs to be done during quiet times, devoid of all distractions, this all you and, the enjoyment of your interior lasts for years. If you don’t do it right from jump street, you may experience a costly “do-over”
7. Keep the flooring and wall paint uniform across the floor plan, it will keep your spaces visually open and more grandiose. Children’s spaces are usually the exception here.
8. Storage is huge, consider seating, coffee tables and built-in units and multi-functional pieces.
9. Don’t forget the rugs. Rugs ground and define gathering areas, plus most of them are texturally pleasing under foot.
10. The number one ingredient in any interior is textiles. Consider hard or soft fabric treatments on the windows, blinds and shutters are not considered aesthetically pleasing nor energy saving. While shutters come equipped with stature and beauty, they are always defined with fabric accents.
11. Remember, Interior Design is never “Set it and Forget it”, there is always change.
