As we close Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to thank all those who support teachers! NDE's Nevada Reading Week Committee and the City of North Las Vegas Library District are hosting a FREE conference on literacy and learning best practices, and family engagement on Saturday, April 27 (8:30am-4:15pm) at City of North Las Vegas City Hall. Attendees will be able to earn a full day of Curriculum and Instruction credits.
Some of the keynote speakers include City of North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, NV Superintendent of Instruction Jhone Ebert, and many other local, state and national experts. Breakfast and lunch are included, as well as hundreds of FREE resources and books will be provided!

Nevada Reading Week A conference for ALL Nevada PreK-12th Grade librarians, media specialists, classroom teachers, educators, and public librarians

On this we celebrate Carol Haro who started their journey towards educational equity with the . After 3 summers, they "couldn't be done" so they joined Teach For America and have been teaching 3rd grade for the last three years. Here is their reflection about their students:

My students show up to school everyday carrying their world in their Disney Character backpacks, the weight of things like houselessness, racism, lack of access to quality health care and other structural inequities sit next to homework folders and pencils. And still they take those pencils in their hands and do their best every day to learn and grow and reach their full potential as scholars and young people in an ever changing world.

Unfortunately and in part due to the challenges previously mentioned, our scholars are facing a reading crisis. The majority of our students in CCSD and across the nation are not reading on grade level which in turn affects their capacity in all other subjects. Without literacy, there is no access to anything else. I see it everyday, as hard as they may work my students are still reading below grade level. This struggle I’m seeing is not just my own with CCSD reporting that 60% of third graders in Clark County are not reading at grade level. Research shows that these young students who have been failed by the education system are four times more likely to drop out once they reach High School. This in turn puts our youth in vulnerable positions where engaging with high-risk behaviors happens at a much higher rate, which could lead to serious health consequences, incarceration, and even death. This stark reality demands action. Teachers and education at large need support from within AND beyond the classroom to ensure our young learners succeed in all the ways we know they can.
