Happy National Wellness Month!

In August, we celebrate the importance of self-care, stress management, and healthy routines. It's the perfect time to focus on improving our overall well-being to enhance physical, mental, and emotional health.

Try incorporating a small change or new habit that you can continue even after the month is over. Examples include increasing your water intake, adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals, learning to meditate, adding a walk to your daily routine, or making adjustments to better your sleep habits.

Did you know? Vision plays a crucial role in maintaining balance.

Good vision helps you navigate your environment and avoid falls. Your eyes send critical information to your brain about your surroundings, helping you stay steady on your feet. Clear vision will enhance your ability to judge distances and perceive obstacles. To help maintain healthy vision, consider these tips:

▪️ Schedule regular eye exams: yearly check-ups can help catch any issues early
▪️ Protect your eyes: wear sunglasses and protective eyewear
▪️ Eat a healthy diet: consuming foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E, and omega-3 fatty acids can help keep your eyes healthy
▪️ Be mindful of screen time: follow the 20-20-20 rule to help reduce eye strain - every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Concussions commonly occur from a fall, sporting injury, or a motor vehicle accident. Symptoms can include nausea, headaches, fatigue, issues with balance or vision, and challenges thinking or concentrating.

To help boost your recovery, experts recommend getting plenty of rest, eating a nutritious diet, cutting down screen time, and not participating in physical activities until you are cleared by your doctor. Physical therapy can also help mitigate concussion symptoms by decreasing any dizziness and helping to restrengthen and stabilize your core.

Tennis Elbow? These Expert-Recommended Braces Offer Pain Relief Without Restricting 07/11/2024

Are you in need of elbow support on the court or in the gym? Keep reading for some expert tips!

Our Physical Therapist at FYZICAL South Sarasota, Amanda Gautreaux, PT, DPT, shared some expert tips on what to look for in elbow braces. Whether you’re playing at Wimbledon or playing on your community courts, an elbow brace may be right for you. When looking for an elbow brace, it’s important to consider:

🎾 Support Without Restriction: You should feel support from your elbow brace, but your movement should not be restricted.
🎾 Fit and Adjustability: Make sure your brace is adjustable. If the brace is too tight, your movement will be limited, and if it is too loose, the brace will not provide proper support.
🎾 Breathable and Adjustable Materials: The material should be breathable since you’ll be wearing it while you are breaking a sweat. Nylon, polyester, and spandex blends are good options.

Did you know? Your shoes could be worsening your lower back pain.

Your choice of footwear can have a significant impact on your lower back health. The worst shoes for people with lower back pain are flip-flops, high heels, and flat shoes. Flip flops lack the necessary arch support and cushioning, leading to misalignment and additional strain on your lower back. High heels shift your body's weight forward, forcing your back muscles to work harder to maintain balance, which can exacerbate pain. Similarly, flat shoes often fail to provide adequate support, causing your feet to roll inward, and affecting your posture negatively.

If you've been experiencing low back pain, we recommend switching to shoes that offer better support and cushioning. Running, fitness, or tennis shoes are excellent choices as they are designed to absorb shock and provide stability, reducing the pressure on your lower back. However, the best solution is personalized to your specific needs.

Call your local FYZICAL today to learn more about how we can help you find the perfect footwear and other personalized treatments to alleviate your discomfort and enhance your quality of life!

This specialized program is based on the idea that patients with a higher functional capacity are better equipped to tolerate surgery or injury.

Studies have shown that patients with a higher level of physical well-being prior to surgery have decreased complications following surgery and improved outcomes, including a shorter hospital stay, improved tolerance to exercise, faster return to work, higher quality of life, and decreased levels of disability, illness, and death.
