When it comes to testing your thyroid health, here are 2 key things to keep in mind:

1. Normal does NOT mean optimal! If you get ā€œnormalā€ results but still feel your health concerns are unresolved, you should advocate for a deeper dive.

2. Most doctors in the conventional setting will only order a TSH or a Free T4 level. This only gives part of the picture. For a complete overview of your thyroid health you should ask your provider to order all 6 tests.

One of my favorite things to do is read I particularly love soaking up the science šŸ§¬ about womenā€™s health and functional medicine. There is so much wonderful information available to us today. Technology has given us everything at our fingertips. Call me old fashioned but I still love a good book šŸ“–. Knowledge is power when it comes to advocating for yourself at the doctors šŸ„¼ office and when making decisions about your health. Women are too often gas lit by their doctors when looking for answers about their symptoms in menopause and peri menopause. Here are 3 books every woman should have in her arsenal. These babies are chocked full of the information you need to make the best decisions for yourself and your health. Remember KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

I have a love hate relationship with wine šŸ·. I LOVE it and HATE the fact that it is not considered a SUPERFOOD šŸ„’šŸ„•šŸ„¬.

One thing that has become very consistent in the last 2 years (since Covid) is that people are consuming much more alcohol than prior to the pandemic. While I admit I was one of those people, I realized it was becoming too much of a regular habit. Donā€™t get me wrong..I still enjoy an occasional glass or two of wine howeverā€¦..given the facts belowā€¦I have decided to make it ON OCCASION (kind of like birthday cakeā€¦which I also wish were a superfood and is not! Especially the gluten free kind with the white buttercream frostingā€¦April 8 canā€™t come soon enough!).

Here are some compelling reasons to limit or even avoid (did I say avoid?) alcohol: šŸ· One additional benefit of aging and especially being a woman (lucky us) is that we donā€™t process alcohol as well as we used to. Our livers are not the super heroes they used to be. šŸ· Alcohol brings our metabolism to a screeching halt! The belief is that is slows down your fat burning machine by a whopping 70 percent for around 24 hours. Now, if you are having a glass or two or threeā€¦.every nightā€¦.you can kiss your fat burning days good bye!
šŸ· Alcohol is associated with a significantly increased risk of breast cancer.

That being saidā€¦1-2 drinks per week (yes, I said PER WEEK) is probably OK for most of us (this is not to replace advice from your doc). However, if you have an increased risk of breast cancer in your family, an addictive personality, difficulty detoxing or a number of other risk factorsā€¦it is probably best to avoid it all together.

Since 1988, World AIDS Day has been celebrated annually on December 1st. It is an opportunity for us to continue to raise awareness and continue to support the fight against AIDS.Ā I use this day annually to remember so many dear friends who lost their battle with this disease early on and to pray for those still afflicted.Ā I am grateful for the advancements in treatment and prevention and pray for a cure someday soon.

Did you know that approximately 80-90% of the worlds population has been exposed to EBV? šŸ¦  One of the number one complaints we hear from patients is FATIGUE, and very often we find reactivated Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) in their lab work up.Ā UNFORTUNATELY, EBV is not generally recognized as a treatable illness in conventional medicine.

šŸ¦  Once the virus enters our bodies it has to get into our cells to replicate.Ā  It has to go through our immune system in order to do that, so maintaining a healthy, strong immune system is KEY! If our immune system is burdened by stress, poor diet, other opportunistic infections (think Lyme disease and other stealth pathogens) and lack of sleepā€¦then EBV can easily slide in and do itā€™s thing.Ā Symptoms are generally due to our immune system reacting to the virus (not the virus itself)

šŸ¦ EBV is a member of the herpes virus family.Ā Herpes viruses LOVE the mucous membranes and the nervous system.Ā  Herpes simplex 1 and 2 have an affinity for mucous membranes (think canker sores and STD herpes)

šŸ¦  Letā€™s look at Ā 3 COMMON TYPES OF EBV:
1. ACUTE ILLNESS - lasts 2-4 weeks generally
2. Chronic active illness - lasts 3-6 months
3. DORMANT ILLNESS - no symptoms. Minds itā€™s own business

šŸ¦  REACTIVATED EBV is suspected when someone has both SYMPTOMS + ABNORMALLY HIGH LABS

šŸ¦  TESTING:
ā€¢EBV VCA IgM - positive if current active infection.Ā  Can have false positive if over age 60 or in presence of another infection
ā€¢EBV VCA IgG - always positive
ā€¢EBNA - Always positive
ā€¢EBV EA IgG - generally indicates active virus replication
ā€¢EBV PCR - looks at quantity of virus
ā€¢CBC - look at white blood cells, lymphocytes and neutrophils

šŸ¦ TREATMENT:
Oftentimes the virus resolves on itā€™s own. Howeverā€¦treatment is at times indicated.Ā
ā€¢ANTIVIRALS are sometimes used ā€œoff labelā€ to knock back the viral load.Ā  Supplements such as Monolaurin can have a similar effect. Ā
ā€¢VITAMINS AND MINERALS - particularly vitamin A, D, C and Zinc
ā€¢LOTS OF REST AND NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS.Ā

šŸ¦  Work with a functional medicine practitioner who is knowledgeable in this area of medicine.Ā  Rememberā€¦itā€™s generally not just EBVā€¦look at root cause of re-activation.
