Diagnosis:

"... I lost the ability to run and had so much time on my hands to not only recover, but make a change.

In 2018 I started Couch Pennies Foundation to address the issues I, and many others, experience whilst having a rare disease.

Through we have sent out Over 100 care packages, spoke to legislators about issues in our community, and so much more to aid the Rare Disease realm.

I share my story because I was so alone being diagnosed. Through social media and Couch Pennies, I have been able to connect with others like me, help someone in their Rare Disease journey, and be helped to find the right doctors and therapies."

🌱READ OUR FOUNDER’S STORY🌱

“In 2013, I was diagnosed with Neuromyelitis Optica, a severe inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system and often results in paralysis or blindness. At the time, I was just happy to know that the three (3) months of research study with NIH was not in vain! The guessing game was finally over and treatment can be determined to help alleviate three (3) long years of pain and discomfort.

Shortly after, I started Rituximab, a form of chemotherapy (immunosuppressant), which if tolerated, may reduce the relapse frequency, and improve disability in most patients with . I’ve been on treatment for seven (7) years and have since developed four (4) additional : Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Sjogren’s Syndrome and Occipital Neuralgia—I urge you to look them up.

I founded , a 501c3 nonprofit after because living with an autoimmune disease has been a lonely journey, and I was in need of a space where I can be myself, share my challenges, and not be judged. I have a great support system but if I’m being honest, they can’t handle seeing me down. I needed a community that can truly relate and understand my struggles, so I created it!

ITHRIVE is dedicated to advancing the lives of individuals diagnosed with an autoimmune disease by fostering personal and emotional wellness through self care services and resources. We focus on self care to maintain our sanity and to counteract the side effects of treatments and medications. I’ve mastered coping mechanisms and a lifestyle of wellness that I’m passionate about sharing with others in my community so that we can all thrive!”

Today is , and since we’re in the season and spirit of giving, consider and help us further our mission! We are excited about what the future holds but we can’t make the impact we desire without you! We are a 501c3 nonprofit so your contributions are tax deductible!

reminds us that doesn’t mean we’re stuck inside or cut off from the world! ⠀

As we approach a new week, let’s make the best of the time we’ve been given! ⠀

Here are 5 things to keep you moving and thriving when the entire world is in a complete standstill:⠀

1. GET OUT OF BED! Yes, take a bath or shower, and spend the day in the living room or the porch but not in bed!⠀

2. FIX A MEAL! Or a smoothie! We have all the time to try a new recipe or make one up with the ingredients you have at home! Whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, treat yourself or your quarantine buddies to a delicious meal⠀

3. DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING! In our current reality, this is likely true, and all the more reason you should be up for the challenge! Put on your favorite tunes, sing along and dance the uncertainty away!⠀

4. GO OUTSIDE! Go for a run, take the dog for a stroll, or go for a scenic drive or coffee run like Ashleigh did! Whatever you decide, don’t spend this next week in the house ⠀

5. GET SOME SLEEP! Believe it or not, many people are not getting enough sleep due to fear and anxiety about what’s happening in the world right now. We want to encourage you to focus on the things you can control and make the best out of the time you have, and rest so you have the energy you’ll need to take on the day (tips 1-4) and THRIVE!⠀

Hey ! We made it to March, and that’s a lot to be grateful for!⠀

These couple of months has not been easy but I’m here to say it’s getting better and I am expecting a wonderful outcome for all of us!⠀

We can all agree that battling an autoimmune disease is not a walk in the park. In fact, it’s like running a never ending race that sometimes leave us feeling depleted and defeated! ⠀

Yet every day, ⠀
We CHOOSE LIFE⠀
We RUN THE RACE ⠀
We GIVE OUR BEST⠀

Because there’s MORE to LIFE than our chronic illnesses!🌱⠀

This month, we will focus on TRANSPARENCY! By definition, transparency is the condition of being transparent, also known as clarity, openness, accountability, straightforwardness, and candor.⠀

It takes strength and courage to be transparent but it’s through this exposure of openness that we may discover true healing! ⠀

YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Join me as I share my challenges (and yours) on this journey to wellness! ⠀

Stay tuned to our “Transparency” highlight for stories every Thursday! ⠀
Use our hashtag as you share you thrive above your challenges! Happy Monday!🌞⠀
