MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lawrence, KS: Building a partnership between police and the community has been the vision of Police Chief Rich Lockhart since he came to the Lawrence Kansas Police Department. “I’ve always said I want our officers to police our community the way the people want to be policed,” said the Chief. “When I heard the Department of Justice facilitates a program to help strengthen our partnerships and continue the dialogue moving us in that direction, I knew they were the experts to bring on board.”

What: Strengthening Police and Community Partnerships Program
When: Saturday, July 27, 8:30 am – 1:00pm
Saturday, August 3, 8:30 am – 1:00pm
Register: Registration is required. Please fill out the form here: https://bit.ly/RegisterSPCP
Where: Lawrence High School

The Strengthening Police and Community Partnerships Program is a full-day workshop, split into two half-days, where DOJ facilitators hope to improve trust and develop partnerships between police and community members by identifying issues and collectively creating solutions. It requires a diverse group of participants with open minds ready to communicate openly, honestly, and productively. Anyone willing to share with a solutions-based spirit is encouraged to attend.
LKPD’s Office of Diversity and Community Engagement is organizing the event and its commander, Lt Myrone Grady, says they’re working to be sure as many people as possible hear about the workshop so they’re able to hear new voices. “Some of the silence between law enforcement and certain community members are longstanding, in fact, generational,” says Grady, “so these discussions may not flow easily. But we believe the hard work can bring mutual understandings as a foundation to build upon.”
All Lawrence community members are invited to attend. Registration is required. To download a flyer, click here: https://bit.ly/SPCPflyer (please share)

Update: The override attempt did not happen today as expected. It is expected to happen this week. Please continue to email!

We support full and fair funding of public schools with tax policy that will generate revenue sufficient to fund the school finance formula. The current Flat Tax plan is projected to leave Kansas with a negative balance of $514.6 million by 2029. The bill passed through the legislature in record time using a gut-and-go and was vetoed by Gov. Kelly. An override attempt is expected today in the House.

Please email legislators and let them know that Kansas children deserve a tax plan that supports our public schools, not another experiment.

February 3, 1914 – Ruth Inge Hardison is a Black American sculptor, artist, and photographer, known particularly for her 1960s busts entitled "Negro Giants in History was born in Portsmouth, VA, on February 3, 1914".

Her 1983 collection called "Our Folks," which features sculpted portraits of everyday people, is also of note. Hardison's artistic productions largely surround historical black portraiture, and she is especially interested in creatively representing the unspoken voices of the Black American past. She was the only female in the Black Academy of Arts and Letters (BAAL), a group that encourages awareness of Black artistic accomplishments, when this organization was founded in 1969.

Her family later moved to Brooklyn, New York. Before completing her education, Hardison acted in the Broadway Productions of George Abbott’s “Sweet River” and “Country Wife,” opposite Ruth Gordon. During her brief career in the theater, she began sculpting as a hobby. When she took part in the yearlong “What A Life” production, she even created a sculpture of its cast, later displayed at the Mansfield Theatre.

As a young woman, she studied music and creative writing at Vassar College. She also studied at the Art Students League of New York and Tennessee State University. Hardison's works largely begin as clay, wax, or plaster molds, and are later cast into cast stone or bronze. Hardison began “Negro Giants in History” a series of cast iron busts in 1963.

Her first bust in that series was of Harriet Tubman, which measured eight inches in height; she has also created busts of W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Sojourner Truth, and Mary McCleod Bethune, among others. Her bronze Douglass bust, for example, was unveiled at Princeton’s Firestone Library in 1983.

Other public works include a 7-foot abstract figure called "Jubilee" which stands on the campus of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, a series of 18 children on an outdoor wall of I.S.74 in Hunts Point in the Bronx, and a five-foot mother and Child given to Mount Sinai Hospital in 1957 in gratitude for their help in delivering her only child, Yolande, in 1954. She also created a series of Ingenious Americans, little known black inventors and other notables commissioned and sold by Old Taylor Whiskey in the late 1960s.

The series of nine busts included Benjamin Banneker, Charles Richard Drew, Matthew Henson, Frederick McKinley Jones, Lewis Latimer, Garrett Morgan, Norbert Rillieux, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams and Granville Woods. At auctions, her sculptures have earned more than $1300 apiece. In 1990 New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo presented Hardison’s 1990 two-foot sculpture of Sojourner Truth to Nelson Mandela on behalf of the people of New York State. Reflecting on her work, Hardison once said: “During my long life I have enjoyed using different ways to distill the essences of my experiences so as to share for the good they might do in the lives of others.” HAPPY BIRTHDAY INGE HARDISON!!!!! {R.I.P}

Celebrating Black History Month with pride! 🖤

👏 Gladys Bentley, a trailblazing gender-bending performer of the Harlem Renaissance, broke barriers in the 1930s.

Wearing a top hat and tuxedo, Bentley mesmerized Harlem at iconic spots like the Clam House and the Ubangi Club, leaving an indelible mark. In 2019, The New York Times recognized Bentley as "Harlem's most famous le***an" of the era and one of the "best-known Black entertainers in the United States."

🌟 Let's honor Bentley's legacy and continue to celebrate diversity and inclusion! 🌈✊🏾
