FACULTY FRIDAY!
This week we are introducing you to Dr. Leonard Goduto!
Dr. Goduto is an Associate Professor in the Department of Graduate Education, Leadership and Counseling and is the Program Director for the Doctor of Educational Leadership program, which is Rider University's first and only doctoral program.
From the time he arrived in Lawrenceville, Dr. Goduto saw the potential for the Educational Leadership program to become the first program in the history of the university to offer a doctoral degree. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and thought Rider would do a great job in putting this kind of a program together,” he says. “After I was here about four or five years, I started doing research on similar programs. When President Dell’Omo came on (in 2015) the idea really started to gain traction, and so I made a proposal and was given the go-ahead to formulate the program. I formed a committee with two faculty members, Trevor Buser and Judy Nappi, and we spent a good year plus researching and developing this program, and then going through a very rigorous approval process.”
The program received official approval in 2017, and kicked off its first cohort of 15 students last July. Now entering year two, interest in the program continues to grow. The second cohort will be composed of 17 students who were accepted from a pool of more than 40 applicants. Dr. Goduto explains that the doctoral program is not just geared toward K-12 administrators, but is for anyone who would like to take on a leadership role in an educational organization. Dr. Goduto considers his role in creating the Educational Leadership doctoral program at Rider to be his greatest achievement. “It’s meant everything to me,” he says of this accomplishment. “I’ve been in education for 40 years and this is the highlight of my career.”

FACULTY FRIDAY!
This week we are introducing you to Dr. Juleen Buser!
Dr. Buser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Graduate Education, Leadership and Counseling and teaches counseling courses.
After receiving her B.A. in English, Dr. Buser was planning on continuing her English studies in grad school. However, when it came time to plan the next phase in her educational journey, she chose to go in a different direction. “I wanted to do something a little more meaningful, where I felt like I was helping more people,” she says.
Dr. Buser decided to focus on religious training at Princeton Theological Seminary, and it was there that she found her calling in the counseling field. One summer, as part of her clinical pastoral education, she was working in a local hospital’s eating disorder unit, offering spiritual guidance to patients. “That’s when I realized I liked the one-on-one interactions of counseling,” she recalls. “But I needed to gain counseling skills. I wanted to learn more about how you sit down and talk to people when they’re going through a difficult time in their lives.” So, she decided to pursue an M.A. in Counseling and her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision.
One of the primary focuses of Dr. Buser’s research has been looking at how spiritual or religious beliefs relate to mental health. What she has found is that it’s not as simple as saying spirituality is either good or bad for an individual’s mental health, but rather the nature of the specific beliefs that can determine what effect a person’s faith will have. For example, individuals who feel supported by a higher power during a stressful time have reduced levels of disordered eating and cutting behaviors. On the other hand, someone who feels that he or she has been abandoned or is being punished by a higher power is more likely to have a negative outcome. Her research has further shown that the feeling of being abandoned by a god or higher power is actually more detrimental than the feeling of being punished.
