🏃♂️High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has traditionally been thought to be a super effective fat loss tool. While it can be, there are some scenarios where it’s actually a less superior fat loss tool.
🤓 Science shows that fat loss is best achieved via a caloric deficit, resistance training and high protein diet. In this instance, cardio only helps create a caloric deficit.
😮💨 While HIIT is very effective at biting calories, it is also very fatiguing. Consequently it can effect one’s resistance training and thus their ability to maintain muscle.
🚶♂️For those with the goal of fat loss, it might be a better idea for them to choose a less fatiguing form of cardio that has minimal impact on their resistance training. In other words, for those who cannot recover from HIIT, a better lifestyle modification may be to increase NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) via low intensity steady state (LISS) cardio.
✅ While low intensity cardio may be less efficient and burn less calories that HIIT, they can be a better fat loss tool if they are less fatiguing and have minimal impact of one’s strength training. However, we must remember that adherence is king, so if you love sprinting but hate walking, then HIIT may be better for you. Just remember to weigh the pros and cons.
