The water levels are safe today, but that will rapidly change over the next couple of days.

Kayakers clear flood-prone Swatara Creek as remnants of Debby expected to dump more rain on Lebanon County Parts of the Swatara Creek are prone to flooding, especially in East Hanover Township near Harper's Tavern.

NOAA is predicting that the Swatara Creek will reach flood stage later this week as a result of recent rains and the remnants of Debby. Now is the time to prepare for potential flooding.

The Swatara Water Trail is a 60-mile segment of Swatara Creek from Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission Middletown Access in Dauphin County.

Sights along the trail include farms and bank barns, Union Canal locks throughout Swatara State Park, and the only lava deposits in the state!

34th Swatara Sojourn: Swatara Creek Park to Middletown

Kristi English from Pennsylvania American Water joined the Sojourn at Schiavoni Park to talk about the importance of protecting the Swatara Creek as a source of drinking water for Hershey, Palmyra and surrounding areas. A big thank you to PA American Water for sponsoring the 34th Swatara Sojourn!

The weather on Saturday wasn't enough to dampen our spirits for the 34th Swatara Sojourn.

As the weather warms and the creek calls, keep a look out for strainers, sweepers and blockages left behind by winter floods. Thanks to Cocoa Kayaks of Hershey for opening up the channel near the Rt. 743 bridge.

A big Thank You to this great crew from Wabash. They performed maintenance on over 3000 ft of our riparian buffer planting at Swatara Watershed Park. This included weeding, replacing stakes damaged by flooding and replacing dead trees. Excellent job!

For a windshield survey, drive through the 2nd Friday-Saturday monthly; and the 4th Friday and Saturday March, April, September, & October. One Way! Enter from Swope’s Valley Road Trailhead on the northern end of Swatara State Park. PS. The State Park doesn’t allow cars to park at Bordner Cabin, but it’s a short hike from a primitive parking area.
