Journey …. Well I made it one year from surgery with no Covid or Flu….. that was very hard, because that meant the I was not able to see friends and family when I wanted. I will still be wearing a mask when out in public. ….. because my family has asked me to continue to be cautious. I need to keep up with all cancer center screenings by seeing someone every three months and to make sure I have scheduled regular screening appointments. Chances of a second cancer diagnosis is increased once you have Cancer. Please don’t think that I am complaining … just stating the facts.
With this being said, I would like to have feedback about continuing my posts or to end the posts? I would also like feedback on working with people who have a cancer diagnosis and need support?

My Journey continues….. 6-month check with Oncology doctor for estrogen blocker and checkup. I do see side effects like every part of me is very dry ….. need eye drops suggested by my eye doctor earlier this month at my annual eye check, and last month my dentist suggested a water pic and a sonic tooth brush… lots of oils and creams for the skin…. And yes, still emotional due to the med. One thing I learned today that finally made my understand pain issues I have had since surgery Dec 2021. I told you I had an ultrasound after my annual mammogram last month. I asked the oncology doctor why my lymph nodes looked good, but the tech said she saw scar tissue. Well, I said the incision from the removal of the three lymph nodes was higher up under the arm, where does the scar tissue come from….. she said that the incision was higher up, but the actual location of the sentinel lymph nodes removed were much lower under the arm. Now I understand the ache and pain and that it got worse when I over used my right arm. I guess you have to ask the right question or reword your question until one better understands what exactly you are being told. Lymphedema is the most painful part of Breast Cancer and I understand from others they did not realize anymore than I did. …. How I’ve Stopped Attracting One-Sided Relationships That Leave Me Feeling Empty - Tiny Buddha We have to decide that we deserve two-way relationships with people who cherish us for who we are, and we’re not willing to settle for less.

My Journey continues….. My mammogram is fine for my first after Cancer diagnosis. I am still finding discomfort on the right side underarm…. So I had an ultrasound to check out the lymph nodes and surrounding area. Lymph nodes look fine but there appears to be scar tissue in the area that is causing the discomfort. I will look into what might help relieve the pain in the future.
Had my annual eyes check yesterday and find that they are dry…. Could be from radiation I was told, so I will be using eye drops four times a day to help. I know radiation dries out a lot, but never thought about eyes.
Had blood drawn this morning and was told that I should not get blood drawn from my right arm because I had lymph nodes removed. I knew that not to take blood pressure from that arm and not to have vaccinations from that arm…. So nice to have knowledge and happy to share.

Journey… October is Breast Cancer Month… last year in October I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I am scheduled to have my annual mammogram this month. Its an odd feeling to think back and hear that word… Cancer … I got a call yesterday and was told that I would be waiting for the mammogram to be read before I can leave the Bennet Breast Care office…. Plus… after get the ok to leave, I then need to go to the Cancer Center for an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner … who told me last year I have cancer … Makes one take pause….

Journey of how life changes in many ways we dont expect or see......C vaccine and flu high dose last Tuesday. I had to have them in the left arm cause of the lymph node remove on my right side... zero pain from the flu and only when Iaid on my arm did the c vaccine show it was there .... I was told by younger folks that they had a reaction from having both shots at the same time.... I was told by older folks that they were just fine..... guess age does matter

My Journey keeps on going…. I had my second acupuncture treatment at the Dempsey Center this week. Amazing process… one can’t help but relax into a nice deep state of relaxation. She placed several needles in my feet, knee and hands and shoulder. What does this do for me… moves energy to flowing and moving to optimum healing. Between the massage at Wicked Good Massage… that includes reflexology and shoulder/neck massage…. I can be on my feet for a lot longer with no pain issues. My shoulder issue is becoming more and more relaxed. What amazing talented practitioners!! If you have needle issues, don’t look at the photo.

Journey continues…Today I had my very first acupuncture session at the Dempsey Center in Lewiston. I love self-hypnosis and practice self-hypnosis all the time. But I must say…that acupuncture takes you to another place in a matter of minutes…without doing anything but relaxing in a reclining chair. WOW… My person in the surgeon’s office mentioned it was available to all cancer patients so I decided to look it up and see. I had to have an orientation to understand what was available in person and what was available online. I filled out forms and now can go into the online, sign up and check out the classes. The next class I am interested in is for information on lymphoedema. The Dempsey center has classes in Lewiston and in South Portland as well as online. Next maybe a class on nutrition. If you have the opportunity to support the Dempsey center by participating in the Dempsey Challenge… please do so. I did the 5K walk race for a few years with the NorthEast Bank team and worked the Reiki tent for the bikers for my business Vilene Wellness . Never thinking that I would later be eligible for the services as a Cancer patient. So glad I had the opportunity to give my time and efforts.

Journey continues …. I had a massage Monday as this helps take the stress out, and remove blocks… I talked to Kristen about the fact that I have this ache that doesn’t quit on the underarm side of the breast. She suggested that I do gentle movement of the right arm by holding it up and bending in toward my head and out to the side. All gentle movement, never forcing or pushing…. And guess what…. It takes the ache away…. Now you may ask why…. Because I had three lymph nodes removed and the others have to do more work… I need to help them by helping them drain…. Oh does that work and make the pain go away.

Yes, my Journey continues… as well as my cancer friends who check in …. We don’t complain or talk much about the day-to-day parts of our lives now. The scars are still healing inside and outside. The aches and pain are just part of each day. The meds and treatments are being taken so that we hope not to have the word Cancer being spoken by another doctor. Just because most people don’t talk about what s happen doesn’t mean they don’t need your support. I am very vocal about my cancer journey and how the meds, treatments and mental issues play with my life. I encourage people to ask questions, where many are not open to questions. Just thought I would remind you that your support does mean so much…..

Journey .... I find it interesting that when people actually see me in person...they say "Your looking good". Not a bad thing to say, and mostly they dont know what to say. Some wonder why I wear a mask...although they dont say anything. Cancer comes in so many forms ... some of us look good on the outside, some look very tired and some dont look good at all. Please be aware that we have changed on the inside too and many are physically healing many many months after surgery and many many months after radiation, and I myself cant really make comments on Chemo... because I didnt need it. I am speaking for others, not just me when I say that patience and understanding is nice. I am very open with what s happening... most are not.

As my Journey continues…. Today I had my 6 month check up for surgery at the New Cancer Center on the CMMC campus, located in front of the parking garage. Beautiful building where it looks like the Dempsey center is now part of this. The directories are not completed as of yet, and I didn’t see what was on the second floor.
I got detailed paperwork of my specific information on all the surgery, scans, and radiation treatments in an easy to read form. I exchanged it for my spreadsheet of my entire medical, surgery, meds, allergies, vaccinations, and appointments history. They will scan in my papers so they will have it all together. I really like having my information on a spreadsheet because I don’t have to fumble looking for anything they might ask and each doctor gets the same answer.

I will be seeing someone from the team of doctors every 3 months so that I am monitored closely for the first full year. This is something you might like to take into consideration about your friends and family. Just because they got the cancer out and one is physically healing, there are many other issues going on you will not be aware of. Examples of anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and possible prosthetics or equipment you are not aware of.

Had my follow-up appointment today.. and the assistant takes my Blood Pressure. Of course taking in on my left arm because of the lymph nodes were taken from the right arm. Keep that in mind for those who had surgery to direct your medical person to take it on your non- surgical arm.
The medical assistant placed the BP cuff on my arm and the automatic machine started to apply pressure…. It went up to 247 and she kind of freaked because she was expecting me to have extremely high BP as it never goes that high for no reason. Wow what a pinch and pressure that was… but my actual BP was 117/87 … normal for me. She could not understand what happened as she never has had that happen. Remember the blood pressure machine is automatic.
My take is that the one thing my mother hated was to have her BP taken cause it caused her pain…. I got her message… Happy Birthday Mom !! I hear you…

Saw my dermatologist last week.. all clear on skin... no need to book an annual as skin cancer isn't my issue. He did say to cover with a floppy hat and liked I had sunscreen clothing.
Next week I see my hematology oncology doc... I suppose we will talk about new med affects... I also want to ask her about how compromised I might be with the numbers raising again in Maine. I want Maine to be number one at something, but not cases. I haven't had chair visits and would like to know how at risk I will be with them...
