Monday • TENEBRAE (Service of Shadows)
March 25th • 7:00PM • Basilica
Tenebrae (“shadows” or “darkness”) is a Holy Week service that is at least 1,000 years old. Originally held after midnight but later held at a variety of times, Tenebrae would be sung each day of the Triduum in a church lit only by 15 candles. These were extinguished one by one until the church was left in darkness. At that point, a loud noise (“strepitus”) would be produced – sometimes by slamming a hymnal or other book shut, sometimes by stomping on the floor – symbolizing the earthquake after Christ’s death. Like the “lessons and carols” services familiar at Christmas, Tenebrae consists of hymns and readings.

HOLY WEEK - What Is It?
Holy Week is the most significant week in Catholicism. Spanning from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday,
it marks the final stretch before Easter Sunday, the celebration of Jesus' Resurrection.
During this sacred week Catholics pray and reflect on the profound journey of Jesus’ suffering, sacrifice, and victory over death. It starts on Palm Sunday, a day that commemorates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.
A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
This weekend marks the beginning of the High Holy Days for us as Catholics. It is really a special time of prayer and remembrance as we walk with Jesus during the last days of his life. For me, it has always been significant to take the part of the crowd for the reading of the Passion and yell out, “Crucify him! Crucify him.” It makes me wonder if I would have been a member of the crowd who yelled that if I were there. I would love to think that I would have been on Jesus’ side but that would have taken a kind of courage in my faith that is not there most of the time. It is also special to wash the feet of parishioners because it reminds me of my place here in the parish. As a servant for God and God’s people, that is the image I want to follow, on my knees washing parishioner’s feet. Linking service to Good Friday, I always thought it special to kiss the crucifix, especially the feet of Jesus. Our faith is so rich in tradition. I would love every Catholic in our area to make this week of Holy Days different than all the other weeks of the year.
Help us get the word out of the many services we have for Easter Sunday by bringing it up to people who do not go to Mass. I have written to every registered parishioner and our parish put together a newsletter with all the activities happening in the parish. If you did not get one, it might mean that you are not registered in the parish or that we have old information. Please let us know so that we can update your information for future reference.
We are in the process of assessing all of our properties and buildings. Please know that all of them are aging and some need tender care and love in order to extend their life. It seems that they are mostly hitting the 50 year old mark, like our boilers, roofs, and floors, and many of them will need to be replaced or updated. We have also come to realize that most everything we have is behind the technological advances of these last 20 years so we are having trouble finding parts that are computerized in some way. I am bringing this up only as a heads up so that you are not surprised as we have to expend resources on buildings and property.
– Fr. Daniel
