Let's come together this holiday season to bring warmth and comfort to those in need. Your generosity can make a world of difference! Please consider donating essential winter items like warm coats, hypothermia socks, gloves, hats, sleeping bags, and blankets. Each donation, no matter the size, helps bring warmth and hope to someone’s life.
Join us this holiday season in giving back to the community that raised us. We're coming together to support those in need, including new Mainers and our unhoused neighbors. From Lewiston to Auburn, Portland to Boothbay, donation boxes will be set up across Maine. Let’s spread warmth, love, and hope—give what you can at a location near you, and make a difference for someone this holiday. ❤️

As October ends, the fading green grass and the brilliant autumn colors remind us of the beauty in change. This season invites us to pause and reflect, embracing what lies ahead and letting go of what no longer serves us. With each falling leaf, we’re gently reminded to hold gratitude for all that remains and to accept the shifts with grace. May we carry this warmth and reflection into November, grounded in appreciation and openness. 🍂✨🧡
This week, I honor the memory of my beloved sister, Juweriya Mohamed. She was not just a sister; she was a daughter, a mother, and a remarkable leader. Juweriya was in the final stages of completing her PhD when her life was tragically cut short on October 25, 2022. She had an incredible future ahead of her, bursting with limitless dreams and aspirations. In the face of this profound loss, I am resolutely committed to keeping her legacy alive. Juweriya had a powerful vision: to establish a STEM-focused school for girls in Region 5 of Ethiopia. This dream embodies her unwavering belief in the potential of young women to shape their futures and transform their communities. Her spirit and determination continue to inspire me every day. By pursuing her vision, I aim to create opportunities for girls who, like Juweriya, possess the power to change the world. Together, we can ensure her dreams not only endure but flourish, lighting the way for future generations.
Please note that our office will be closed this Friday in honor of her memory. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Yesterday's workshop focused on mental health and workplace wellness, with a theme of "Faith in Health." We discussed strategies for reducing workplace stress, including tips shared at local faith centers. One highlight was the benefits of watermelon for mental health. From 1:30 to 3 PM, we held a tailored in-person workshop, and later from 6 to 7:30 PM, we hosted a virtual workshop for youth. The discussions were very informative and interactive, making for a meaningful day-long celebration of World Mental Health Day.💚💙💜
Happy International Day of the Girl!💜💜
The 2024 theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” highlights the urgent need for action and the hope within girls’ voices. Girls everywhere face challenges like climate change, economic disparities, and gender inequality. Their rights are often overlooked, limiting their potential. Yet, girls show remarkable resilience. They confront these issues head-on and envision a world where every girl is empowered. This vision is a call to action for allies to support their needs. With the right resources and opportunities, the potential of girls is limitless. Families and communities thrive when they lead, creating a brighter future for all. Now is the time to listen to girls and invest in their well-being. Together, we can build a future where every girl can realize her dreams.

Purple Counts is an initiative dedicated to healing and resilience, especially poignant for MCI and Lewiston in light of recent mass shootings and the loss of my sister, whose favorite color was purple. This October, we’re hosting a series of empowering events in recognition of World Mental Health Day. Purple symbolizes not only her memory but also stands as a powerful reminder in the fight against domestic violence. Join us to share stories, raise awareness, and create a safe space for all. Together, we can break the silence, honor those affected, and foster healing in our community.

Fatima: "I chose the painting titled 'Running' because it powerfully captures the strength and hope of Somali girls and women. The depiction of running away from violence, combined with traditional clothing that represents cultural identity, makes it incredibly impactful. It serves as a reminder of the courage and determination required to overcome difficult situations."💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

October: A Month of Reflection and Recognition
Join us this October for our annual event, The City Of Us, featuring a purple theme to symbolize our commitment to mental health awareness. This month, we reflect on the significance of mental health and honor profound losses, including World Mental Health Day, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the second anniversary of my sister's tragic death from gun violence, and the Lewiston mass shooting that claimed 18 lives. In recognition of these events, our organization is dedicated to fostering healing and resilience. Throughout October, we will host a series of workshops and gatherings focused on compassion, understanding, and community support. Together, we can create a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Join us on this vital journey of healing and connection. Let’s light the way for one another this month!🪻
Learning Through the Seasons🍂🍁🍂
Each season brings its own set of learning experiences, offering us valuable lessons along our journey. Just as winter teaches us the importance of rest and reflection, spring encourages renewal and growth. Summer brings warmth and joy, while autumn reminds us to embrace change and let go. These seasonal shifts mirror our own lives, reminding us that challenges and triumphs alike contribute to our growth. With every struggle, we gain wisdom and strength, preparing us for new beginnings. Let’s celebrate the lessons each season offers, embracing the journey with open hearts and minds. Together, we can learn, adapt, and thrive through every change. 🌱🍂 💙

Last Thursday, Sprout enjoyed a lively picnic at the local park. Friends gathered on the grass, sharing sandwiches, fresh fruit, and pastries. Laughter filled the air as children played nearby, and the group engaged in games like frisbee and tag. They captured joyful moments together, creating lasting memories of friendship and fun.

The principle "the owners of the problem are the owners of the solution" is grounded in compassion and mutual support, focusing on collective healing rather than assigning blame. It recognizes that both those impacted by violence and those involved in harmful behaviors have a role in addressing the root causes of the issue. This approach ensures that the voices of victims are central, honoring their experiences while offering space for accountability from those who have caused harm. It also includes the broader community and systems, fostering an environment of understanding, empowerment, and positive change. Engaging all parties in a non-judgmental, empathetic manner creates a foundation for true healing and long-term resolution, with every voice valued and respected. .
Yesterday's parent workshop, presented by Healthy Androscoggin, focused on nutrition education through the Maine SNAP-Ed program, which empowers community members to shop, cook, and eat healthy on a budget. Their group classes provide simple tips to help families make the most of their food budget, save money, and enjoy nutritious meals. Our final workshop in this series is scheduled for the first Friday of October. Thank you to the entire team for your continued support and dedication. Healthy Androscoggin💙
