Is your pool losing water? And how can you tell if it's a leak?

The average pool loses up to 3.5 inches of water weekly from evaporation. Now factor in swimming and splash out, it could be even more!

But how do you know if it’s evaporation or a leak? To find out, use the bucket test.

Place a 5-gallon bucket on the step of your pool. Fill the bucket up to match your pool’s water level.

Then mark the water level on both the outside and the inside of the bucket. Turn everything off and wait 24 hours.

Then compare the two levels. If the water has gone down more on the outside than the inside, it's a leak.

If it’s the same, it's evaporation. Hope this helps!

Did you know it only takes 17 minutes of sunlight to destroy HALF of your pool’s chlorine?
That’s because chlorine breaks down under the sun’s UV rays & evaporates.

But stabilized chlorine, like chlorine tablets or dichlor granules, doesn’t break down because it contains cyanuric acid, a.k.a. CYA / stabilizer / conditioner. Think of it like sunscreen for your chlorine.

Liquid chlorine, bleach, and cal-hypo shock don’t contain CYA and are unstabilized.

So be sure your CYA levels are between 30 and 50 PPM to help your chlorine survive in the sun.
**more is NOT better!!**

If CYA levels are too high, it will cause chlorine to not be as affective, will cause cloudy/hazy water, high pressure in filter and can cause rashes on skin.

Note: if the stabilizer is TOO high / above 100 ppm, it will not register / come as zero on your test strips because it’s out of range!!

Stabilizer doesn’t go anywhere! Once it’s in your pool it’s in there for good! The only way to lower it, is if you partially drain & add fresh water or use a CYA Remover!

💦 And if you’re not sure, bring us a water sample and we can check out your water to help you.

Summer is here, and so are the peak temperatures. Your pool is your ultimate oasis in the scorching July heat. To ensure it stays refreshing and sparkling, we've got a hot list of tips for you this week!

1. Optimal Pool Temperature
Despite the rise in ambient temperature, it's crucial to keep your pool water at a comfortable swimming temperature (78-82°F). Using a pool thermometer will help you keep track. If the water is too warm, consider investing in a pool cooler or run your pool pump at night to circulate cooler water.

2. Protect Your Pool's Chemistry
High temperatures and increased sunlight can mess with your pool's chemistry, causing chlorine to evaporate faster. Regularly test your water and adjust the chemicals as needed. Consider using a stabilized chlorine or a chlorine dispenser with a sun shield to prevent rapid dissipation.

3. Mind the Water Level
Summer heat can cause rapid evaporation, and a busy pool often leads to water splash-out. Ensure your water level is halfway up your pool skimmer opening for optimum filtration. We’ve also been getting heavy rains lately which increases the water level, (and also dilutes our pool chemistry) so drain as necessary to keep it midway on the skimmer and test after to see what you may need.

4. Increase Your Cleaning Routine
More pool usage means more debris. Adjust your cleaning routine to include daily skimming and weekly vacuuming to prevent buildup. Check and clean your filters regularly to ensure they are working efficiently.

It was staffed by 360 people, generating paychecks that fueled business throughout the area. Then, in 2013, it closed. Overnight it went from being a place with purpose to a question mark. How often should you shock your pool?
—>The answer might be more often than you think.

Here are 5 rules for shocking your pool:

1. Shock weekly to reboot your active chlorine.
2. Shock when your pool is cloudy to kill contaminants.
3. Shock when your pool is starting to turn green.
4. Shock after a party or heavy use.
5. Shock after a heavy rainstorm.

Remember, shock is calcium-hypochlorite.

Don’t be fooled by a fancy or well-known label. The best will be 73%, if lower than that, even though often cheaper, you’ll need more in order to do the same job.
**Also look to see what the serving suggests.**

We’ve been helping people who use different brands and their serving is 2lbs to treat 10,000 gallons! 🤯 So you’re already using double the amount since it’s typically 1lb per 10,000 gallons or our super zappit is 1lb per 16,500 gallons!

If you're struggling with green pool water, or even cloudy water, here's a simple, step-by-step process to help clear it up:

1. Brush your pool walls and floor. This loosens up the algae or anything that’s sitting on the walls.

2. Test your alkalinity and pH. Balance these levels before you add any shock. This will make the treatment more effective. *if your alkalinity or pH are too high or too low, they will not allow your chlorine to work to it’s full potential*

3. Add pool shock. Depending on how severe your algae looks, you'll want to add a double dose, triple dose, or even a quadruple dose of chlorine shock. (Shock is calcium-hypochlorite) *check the back of your container for serving instructions, typically 1lb serves 10k gallons of water*

4. Run filter for at least 8 hours. This will help the shock circulate. The longer you can run it, the better. After at least 8 hours, your water shouldn’t be as green or maybe now it’s just cloudy. If it's still green, do another round of shock!

5. Clean out your filter. All the dead algae is trapped inside, so you'll want to either backwash or change your cartridge filters. You may also have to vacuum if you can see it to sweep up what’s laying on the bottom of the pool.

6. If after two days of this process, your pool is still green, add an algaecide to help kill the algae. *your typical algaecide is actually made to be a preventative rather than a reactive, (even though we often only use algaecide when the pool is green). When shopping, make sure to get an algaecide that has the world “kill” in the name, this type of algaecide is reactive & so it’ll be faster-acting to destroy the algae growth.

7. Retest your water. Adjust your ph, Alkalinity, chlorine, and calcium hardness levels as needed.

Hopefully, your pool is clear at this point! 🙃 As always, give us a call if you’re having issues. We do water tasting at the store! Just make sure you know the size of the pool so we can accurately test it. 🫶🏼
