So many nits!!! Each female louse can lay up to 10 per day so they accumulate fast! They are tough to get out because they’re tiny and literally glued to the hair. We have the right tools and the right products to get these awful things out of your hair!

You can get lice even if you have short hair! Cutting the hair once lice is detected will make it easier to treat but treatment is still necessary unless you buzz the hair all the way down to the skin to completely remove viable nits that will be within 1/4” or less away from the scalp.

Remember, adding a few drops of peppermint or tea tree oil to your favorite hair product can help deter lice. Wishing everyone a Merry bug-free Christmas!

School is back in session and so is lice! If you get one of those dreaded lice emails from the school and you think your kid may have been exposed give me a call! Half off head checks through the end of September.

It is especially problematic contracting lice when you wear hair extensions. Unfortunately, they MUST be removed before proper lice treatment can start.
Professional hairstylists are legally prohibited from offering services to active lice carriers so extensions cannot be removed at the salon.
Don’t panic! We can remove your hair extensions and provide treatment that will get you lice free so that you are able to get your extensions reinstalled safely as soon as possible!

Lice eggs/nits under a microscope: a viable nit versus the left over casing once the louse has hatched. To the naked eye they look almost the same, just a slight variation in color. It is always best to remove all the nits from the hair viable or not!

We’ve tried numerous brands on our chalkboard wall here at the clinic. They all make the claim only to leave us with a big pile of colorful dust!

Say no to nits! Nits can be very hard to spot when they are fresh and very close to the scalp. However as the hair grows the nits become more visible as they move down the hair shaft. They are not viable at this stage but it’s best to remove these unattractive nuisances. We can help remove even the most stubborn nits!

Can you spot the louse? Typically lice hold onto the hair parallel with the strands and they come in varying shades of brown. This camouflage makes them very hard to see, which is why many people don’t know they have lice for the first few weeks!

It can be difficult to spot lice in the hair because of their size and color, or lack there of. See this nymph (not yet mature louse) in comparison to a dime.

Be festive and deter lice at the same time with peppermint oil.
Holiday get togethers provide more opportunity for lice to spread. The early stages of lice are very hard to detect so those cousins coming to town to visit probably don’t even know they’re bringing lice with them!
Get ahead of it with some preventative measures. Lice have an aversion to the fragrance of peppermint oil as well as other oils like tea tree, rosemary, lavender and neem. Just add a few drops to your favorite hair products to help keep the lice away.

An approximate 6 month lice case. This is determined by how far from the scalp the nits are found. Fresh nits(eggs) are laid within a quarter inch of the scalp. Average hair growth is one half inch per month so nits spotted several inches down the shaft of the hair indicate an ongoing infestation. Nothing we can’t handle! Two hours later this patient gal was lice free and nit free!
