CAPCE
CAPCE is the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education CAPCE, by its charter, maintains the standards for the delivery of EMS CE.
The Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE), was founded in 1992 under the vision and guidance of Janet Head, then President of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Janet recognized that not all EMS continuing education (CE) was of a level or quality that she would expect for practicing EMS providers. Thus, she sought support from the

CAPCE is also a finalist for the 2024 EMS World Innovation Awards for the CAPCE mobile app!
In a world where instant gratification is the new standard and clinicians are seeking simple, streamlined solutions the CAPCE mobile app delivers a new flow of data that will alleviate friction between educational providers and clinicians and put the power into the hands of the individual.
The CAPCE mobile app provides immediate, real-time access to individual CE course records within one second of the course completion. Thus, the CE course completion data, and the relevant course completion certificates, are immediately available for the EMS clinician to report, use, print, store, or email, depending on their individual needs.
They will no longer be dependent on the education provider to report their completions or send their certificates. These are immediately available with the CAPCE mobile app.
Further, the mobile app seamlessly integrates with the CAPCE CE database and the CAPCE website.
Come by and say HI and we would love to demonstrate the app for you!

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.”

Mental Health Monday
September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.
National survey data suggests EMTs have a tenfold higher occurrence of suicidal thoughts and attempts, than non-EMTs.
Many feel that they cannot reach out for help, due to stigma surrounding mental health intervention and fear of punishment in the workplace.
Organizations like, Crisis Care and Education are working to create a safe place for providers to seek help. Recently, they launched "Rescue for Rescuers" – a free crisis intervention and therapy service tailored specifically for EMS providers, police officers, firefighters and other first responders. They are offering up to 5 free therapy sessions and providing a plan to continue care after those sessions conclude. Currently, the program is operating in California.

Clear The Shelters: How therapy dogs help our first responders
by Melissa Torres
“For the individual behind every first responder’s badge there is a physical and emotional toll from a job where traumatic events can be a daily occurrence. But the good news is our local first responders at AMR and at the Hampden County Correctional Facility don’t have to go through it alone thanks to the help of some cuddly four legged friends.”

The CAPCE team had a great time at the 2024 NAEMSE Symposium!
Our Executive Director, Jay Scott had the pleasure of presenting Joe Grafft with the 2024 Janet Head Founders Award.
Each year the CAPCE Board of Directors presents the Janet Head Founders Award to the individual whose efforts exemplify leadership and provide enduring contributions to EMS Education and to CAPCE's mission.
Joe, who is a former NAEMSE, CAPCE and CECBEMS board member. He served CAPCE as the NAEMSE Liaison. Joe dedicated a 50+ year career to a didactic role of Emergency Medical Services management and Law Enforcement and Fire Service education.
Joe’s dedication to offering creative, innovative, and exciting alternatives in role of Emergency Medical Services management and Law Enforcement and Fire Service education, has led him to hold leadership roles and sit on an extensive list of boards to include: NAEMSE, NREMT, Minnesota EMS Physicians Association, and more.
Throughout his career, as an EMT, he had many notable accomplishments like when he was awarded the distinguished Service Award from the American Heart Association - Minnesota Region and starting a CPR-AHA Community Training Center which is now the largest TC in the nation.
In September 2005, Joe retired as EMS Manager with the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities-Office of the Chancellor. He and his wife started a new business to offer high quality EMS, Fire & Law Enforcement training/education called Customized Safety Training, LLC.
Congratulations Joe and thank you for your dedication to EMS and your decades long support of CAPCE and its mission!

Tactical Breathing for First Responders
“Tactical breathing, also known as box breathing, is a form of deep, deliberate respiration.
It’s no secret that first responder jobs are stressful, and stress comes with a variety of short- and long-term consequences. When left unchecked, acute stress becomes chronic stress. The cumulative effect can often result in long-lasting physical and mental health problems. The good news is actions you take now to reduce stress can have a positive impact years later. Believe it or not, breathing is a key element of this process.”
