Merciful God, we confess that our words and actions do not always line up. We are quick to confess our faith, but slow to live it. We sing praise to your name, but we pass by orphans and widows on the other side of the street. Change us, O God. By your grace, transform us. Root out the selfishness that hardens our hearts, and replace it with compassion and generosity. Empower us by your Spirit that we might be doers of your word and not hearers only. Merciful God, we confess that we have not lived as your faithful children. We have been angry with the world and nursed grudges against our adversaries. We have hoarded the fruits of our labors rather than share our bounty with the needy. We have not built up our neighbors with words of kindness but have indulged in evil gossip. We have not forgiven the wrongs others have done, even though we desire your forgiveness toward us in Jesus Christ. Today we welcome Rev. Mike Ward to our pulpit. Mike is a Teaching Elder of the Presbyterian Church (USA). He is a graduate of Geneva College and Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. Ordained by Transylvania Presbytery in 1982, Mike served as Pastor of Pisgah Church in Woodford County and then Walnut Hill Church in Fayette County until his retirement in July 2022. He is married to Barbara Waldmann-Ward, a Registered Nurse who has worked at the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital and the UK Dance Blue Pediatric Oncology Clinic since 1982. They have a son and daughter-in-law, George and Jennifer Ward, and grandchildren, Molly and Toby.

Lord, we ask that you rule in our hearts, lead in this world and govern over your kingdom.

Merciful God, we pray for forgiveness when our words and actions are shaped and molded by forces other than the Holy Spirit. For the times when we have used the gifts of your Spirit to enhance our own glory rather than using them to serve others. Forgive us, O God. When our use of your gifts has led to division and discord rather than increasing understanding and unity. Forgive us, O God. For believing one gift to be superior to another rather than celebrating the various ways in which they complement each other and build up the whole community. Forgive us, O God.
Fill us anew with the Holy Spirit so that our worship, witness, and service may reflect our unity and the faithful use of our gifts. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
