Jack Groppo, Ph.D., professor and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Mining Engineering in the University of Kentucky Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering, is one of nine winners to receive UKโs 2024-25 Outstanding Teaching Awards.
โTo even be nominated was an honor,โ Groppo said. โTo be selected from among the many well-deserving faculty at UK was humbling. I have been touched by the hundreds of former students and colleagues that have sent comments and compliments. I had no idea I was having an impact.โ
In addition to serving as the director of undergraduate studies, Groppo is the faculty advisor for UKโs student chapter of the Society of Mining Engineers, which has received eight national awards for excellence in service and K-12 STEM educational outreach. He has also received numerous awards for teaching and research over the past three decades. Most recently he was named a 2022 Great Teacher by the UK Alumni Association.
These awards identify and recognize individuals who demonstrate special dedication to student achievement and who are successful in their teaching. Recipients were selected via nomination and reviewed by a selection committee based in the UK Provostโs Office for Faculty Advancement and the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching. Groppo is one of three Category 1 winners, which honors regular and special title series faculty members.

Today, we held the dedication of the Ken Kreafle True Lean Networking Lounge, a significant milestone in the history of the Lean Systems program at the UK Pigman College of Engineering! ๐
Ken Kreafle has been a leader within the UK Lean Systems program since 2007 and was the first Toyota Executive-in-Residence appointed by Toyota to build the UK Lean Systems program. While at Toyota, Kreafle served as the programโs Toyota Executive-in-Residence and as its program director. Kreafle played a significant role in establishing the direction and development of the UK Lean Systems program by working closely with Fujio Cho, a former President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky.
The Ken Kreafle True Lean Networking Lounge was made possible by a generous donation from Jeff and Barbara Stryker. Jeff Strykerโs collaboration with Kreafle and the Lean Systems program has strengthened Strykerโs business operations and guided several of the Lean Systems programโs corporate clients. His success in applying Lean principles and his continued association with the Lean Systems program are a testament to the impact of his leadership and the power of Lean to transform an organization.
