In partnership with UK College of Medicine and University of Kentucky College of Public Health, we invite you to join us on October 9th from 11:30am-1:00pm for a moderated discussion, “From Campus to the Capitol: Making a Difference in Public Health Through Civic Engagement.” This event will feature an intriguing dialogue between state leaders on the intersection of civic engagement and public health. We’re grateful to be joined by Secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Eric Friedlander, and Charles Booker, Kentucky State Director of Faith Based & Community Initiatives in the office of the Governor.

The goal of this event is to achieve the following objectives:

1. Identify the connection between civic engagement and health
2. Analyze the implications of civic engagement on public health in Kentucky

Today we continue showcasing the great talent at CHET as part of our involvement with One Day for UK. Today we highlight staff who support our faculty. Meet Vilma Bursac, MS, a senior research associate working with Dr. Laurie McLouth in managing cancer care delivery and cancer survivorship research from inception to completion, including clinical trial protocol development, study personnel management, patient recruitment data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
Vilma is currently seeking a PhD in health services research at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health with a concentration in health outcomes. Her interests lie in advancing health equity, closing gaps in health disparities, and utilizing evidence-based interventions to promote behavior change.

Welcome our last SPARK participant, Mandy Dickerson!

Mandy is a Junior studying Public Health at the University of Kentucky. Her research is focused on the environmental injustice and its implications of health for communities of color and low-income. She hopes to shed a light on the disproportionate affects of Environmental Racism to governmental organizations and policymakers. After undergrad, Mandy plans to go to Law school and become an attorney to invoke a positive change.

Darnell is a Junior studying Nursing with a minor in Psychology at Kentucky State University. His research is focused on the social determinants of health and its correlation to the prevalence to metabolic syndrome in the West End of Louisville, Kentucky. He aims to improve the quality of life for individuals living in this area. After undergrad, he plans to pursue a Master's in Public Health where he would specialize in epidemiology.

Lily is a Junior studying Human Health Sciences on the pre-medical track. Her research is focused on how cancer disproportionately affects Appalachian Kentucky when compared to more urban areas in the US. As a native Southeastern Kentuckian she is interested in exploring why this occurs. After undergrad, she plans to attend medical school and specialize in pediatric hematology/oncology.

Botshelo is a Sophomore studying Psychology and Agricultural and Medical Biotechnology at the University of Kentucky. His research is focused on Adverse Childhood Events(ACEs) and it's psychological/neurological outcomes. Botshelo aims to gain a better understanding in the relationship between ACEs and its way of informing the state of adults. After undergrad, he plans to work in a career within the healthcare field.

Eduardo is a Sophomore studying Biology on the pre-medical track at the University of Kentucky. His research is focused on the Health and Nutrition of Hispanics in Appalachia. He plans to investigate the degree of Hispanics in Appalachia are connected to extension nutritional programs. After undergrad, he plans to become a physician-scientist and conduct research within the bioinformatics field.

Keyoncee is a Junior studying Psychology with a minor in Sociology at Kentucky State University. Her research is focused on Adultification and it's impact on Mental Health within black women in college. She plans to acknowledge linguistic diversity through her research. After undergrad, Keyoncee plans to attend graduate school for communication disorders to become a speech pathologist.
