GRANDMA'S APRON
The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..
And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

When it comes down to it, the only knowledge that really matters is how to purify water, how to grow your own food, how to cook and how to build.
And funnily enough, we’re not taught any of that in school.
🤔 Interested in how early you can plant potatoes? I have been hearing you can plant them very early spring is this true? I found these on amazing… Had anyone used these? Do these work?
Just a little tid-bit of info to help ☺️
Took a trip to Whole Foods today. They have their unbleached flour on sale! I think the sale last through 1/2/24.
Last picture explains why I have made the switch to unbleached 😳

The most simplest thing I have ever made. It takes 1 ingredient….
•Cream•
•A WHOLE LOT OF MIXING•
Once the butter and the liquid has separated I pour the liquid into a glass jar (buttermilk) for my buttermilk biscuits. Then I hand squeeze my butter and wash it with clean water to wash off any access liquid, then I form it into the desired shape or bowl for refrigeration. You may also salt it after you wash, if you want salted butter.
I stumbled upon the process one day from a Facebook reel and I thought to myself “surely I could do that.” We searched for fresh cream and found it to be very hard to come by…. So the next time I made a grocery order I picked up a carton of heavy whipping cream (you can see the picture below of the ingredients on the carton). I experimented with mixer and the cream and after around 35 minutes to my surprise it made butter! I also attached the ingredient list for the butter that was in my fridge currently and as you can see although the cream has more ingredients than I prefer, it is still much less than the processed butter.
I am still on the hunt for fresh cream, where I could buy a fresh supply weekly but for now I am satisfied with my heavy whipping cream in the carton 💕 I have learned it doesn’t have to be perfect at first… start small and take your wins!
Who wants a video of the process?
My FIRST sourdough bread loaf 😍
A lot of FIRSTS this past week!
Addie and I made fresh orange juice for the first time this past weekend. She has began learning to hand sew. I made my first garlic cheddar biscuits from scratch a couple of days ago.
A friend of mine gave me my first sourdough bread starter today! I am so excited to introduce you to this bread! I also experimented for the first time today with butter! Butter is sooooo easy it makes me really wonder why we thought we needed all the extra additives in the store bought?
This past year I have overcame many obstacles, it has been a tough year. I am ready for some new simple adventures, involving more learning at home. My goals for this next year is to be happy, I will listen to my feelings, my gut, and just my natural instinct the Lord has given me as a mother. Hoping to find happiness in the simplicity 🫙 Casey and I have been drawn to homesteading for the past couple of years since building our home, however, I feel like time has gotten away from us a little this past year. I cannot wait to see what’s in store this year on our tiny farm.
Follow my journey as we learn together!

This is a good read, “Just hold on. Everything old comes back again”
I have always been fascinated by old farmhouses that stand empty. To me, it's the loneliest scene. My mind envisions the family who first lived there....mother in the kitchen, children running through the yard, and father as he walks in from the field and places his hat on the rack, just inside the door. I can hear laughter and sighs, the clacking of the dinner dishes going into the sink, and the slamming sounds of the old screen door, as the little ones run in and out.
So how did it happen that this lovely old place sits abandoned?
As the world moves forward at an alarming pace, I find myself asking the same question. How did we get here?
But instead of feeling despair, more and more families are finding a way to go back again. They are seeking wide open spaces to run and play. They are seeking homespun kitchens with canning jars and a plot for a small garden and a corner for some chickens. They are longing for breath of fresh air, where they can feel at home. Because there is no feeling so safe as that of home.
My grandmother once said, concerning changing styles and fashions and notions, "Just hold on. Everything old comes back again." And in my heart, I'm hoping she was right.
Blessings to you,
Sherry ♥️
