Have you been looking at a new electric toothbrush? We now offer the Oral-B iO for purchase in office. This is a great option for those in Orthodontics, have a tendency to brush too hard, or struggle to brush for the full 2 minutes. The Oral-B iO has 5 Smart Modes, a Smart Pressure Sensor that will show a red ring if you are brushing too hard, has an available app to help coach you for the best clean, and a timer to ensure that you are brushing for the full 2 minutes. What's not to love? Ask us for a demo at your next appointment or let us know if you want to stop in to pick one up. šŸŖ„šŸ¦·

Has your child had a dental trauma injury? If so ā€“ call your dentist first to determine if the injury requires immediate treatment or if the treatment can wait until another day. Your dentist may want to see your child immediately if your child has severe pain, bleeding from the tooth itself, a large cut on the gums or lip, a large fracture of the tooth resulting in pain, or if a tooth is pushed out of place.

Many children and adults suffer from ā€œcanker soresā€ (aphthous ulcers) in their mouth on a periodic basis. Canker sores are often caused by trauma to the gums during eating or brushing teeth, or by eating acidic or spicy foods. However, many people also get canker sores from their toothpaste, especially if it contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which is a popular surfactant ingredient. If you get frequent canker sores, try using a toothpaste that is free of SLS ā€“ examples include Crest Densify, Tomā€™s of Maine, and some types of Sensodyne toothpaste.

As we mentioned before, a recent study reported that almost 60% of Nebraska 3rd-graders have a cavity.Ā  How can you most effectively prevent cavities in for a young child?Ā  The answer is simple (but is hard to put into practice: (1) Give young children only drinks and snacks without added sugar, such as natural fruits/vegetables, nuts or cheeses, (2)Ā  brush your childā€™s teeth for them once each day using a fluoride toothpaste, and (3) do not allow eating or drinking (except water) after the bedtime toothbrushing.

03/21/2024

A recent report by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Servies showed that Nebraska 3rd Grade Students have less cavities than the national average, and they have less cavities than almost 10 years ago when the last study was performed.Ā  Thatā€™s good news! Unfortunately, the not-so-good news is that still over half (58%) of Nebraska 3rd-graders DO have a cavity.Ā  How can cavities be prevented? Avoid sugary snacks and drinks and use a fluoride toothpaste.Ā  More information to comeā€¦..

This past week we celebrated "Dental Assistants Week". Pediatric Dentistry P. C. is blessed with some of the best dental assistants around.

After brushing your childā€™s teeth with a fluoride toothpaste, it is important to avoid giving your child food or drinks immediately afterwards ā€“ the fluoride in toothpaste needs time to stay in contact with your dental enamel. (Fluoride does not ā€œdiffuseā€ into your enamel immediately) In fact, it is best to avoid rinsing off your toothpaste with water after toothbrushing ā€“ instead, spit out the excess toothpaste, and then go to your day (or go to bed)!

We have been celebrating Children's Dental Health Month by visiting local daycare centers to provide education on choosing healthy snacks and how to properly brush their teeth. We love being out in the community!

If you prefer, you can use text message (385-233-2070) and email ([email protected]) to contact us, too! But remember: text and email is NOT secure, so do not send private information (e.g. photos, insurance, health history) via text and email! (secure email is available - - just ask us)

A powered toothbrush can be a good way to enhance your childā€™s toothbrushing efficiency.Ā  During your next visit, we can show you samples of powered toothbrushes, and can help you in purchasing the right model for you child (Spoiler Alert: you donā€™t have to spend over $50 for a durable powered toothbrush that can last for many years!)

02/02/2024

Preventing ā€œcavitiesā€ for adolescent children has unique challenges, especially when adolescents make their own dietary, snacking, and oral health choices. At Pediatric Dentistry, P.C., we specialize in communicating with our patients of all ages and their families. At each checkup, we review oral hygiene techniques, diet choices, and fluoride use ā€“ all which will greatly impact your childā€™s risk of getting ā€œcavitiesā€! Check out the hundreds of Google reviews to see how we communicate with our patients!

01/31/2024

Flossing is important for keeping a healthy smile.Ā  But even more important is controlling your childā€™s diet and optimizing their use of topical fluoride.Ā  We recommend using a fluoride toothpaste twice daily, and for children at higher risk of getting cavities or for those who have had cavities in the past, we recommend a daily over-the-counter fluoride rinse.Ā  Together with an intentional plan for healthy snacking (snack foods and drinks should have no added sugar), you can maximize your childā€™s chance of having a ā€œcavity free checkupā€ at your next dentist visit!

01/26/2024

Most children have developed the necessary skills to brush their teeth effectively by age 10. Before that age, we recommend that an adult help a child brush their teeth -- for toddlers, adult help is needed daily; but for school age children, an adult should help with toothbrushing every other day. Eventually, by age 8-10, the adult should supervise toothbrushing once per week. In this way, the adult will be a great teacher and role model for a lifetime of good oral health habits!

Today we are celebrating Olga. We hope you have a wonderful birthday and the best year yet! Thank you for all you do for us and our patients!

12/18/2023

Holiday season is a wonderful time to gather with family and friends ā€“ and often the gatherings involve special desserts and treats.Ā  Consuming sugar in moderation, and limiting consumption of simple sugars to mealtime only, is the key to a healthy diet and healthy teeth for children and adults alike.Ā  Enjoy those gingerbread cookies and homemade jellies and jams ā€“ just remember to not ā€œgrazeā€ on sugary foods throughout the day in order to reduce sugar intake and reduce your risk of dental caries!

12/13/2023

The winter scholastic sports season is here, and many of our adolescent patients sustain trauma to their teeth while playing basketball ā€“ either due to contact with the ball or another personā€™s elbow, hands, or head! As with other sports that involve incidental contact, a mouthguard is the best way to prevent damage to your childā€™s teeth.Ā  A store-bought mouthguard is adequate for most situations.Ā  At Pediatric Dentistry, P.C. we can also fabricate a professional-style mouthguard for adolescents who have all permanent teeth erupted.Ā  Ask us about your mouthguard options!

05/08/2020

I hope this message finds you and your family well and safe!

At Pediatric Dentistry, P.C. we are resuming patient care at our office, and as always, we are focused on your safety and on providing the best oral health care for your child. Despite all the recent changes in our community and with routines, we continue to follow the latest infection control recommendations of our local health department, the Centers for Disease Control, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the American Dental Association. As a result, you will notice some changes at your next appointment (go to www.pediatricdentistrypc.net/covid-19 for the latest information). These changes will include:
- We will contact you on the phone before your appointment, ask you some screening questions, remind you to wear a ā€œface coverā€ when arriving for your appointment, remind you that only one parent/guardian can attend each childā€™s appointment, and explain our ā€œcar waiting roomā€ concept
- Upon arrival to our building, we require that you call our office first to let us know you have arrived; we then will let you know when to enter our office
- We will ask you to use hand sanitizer upon entering our office, and you will answer questions about your COVID-19 risk status and you will review a new, additional consent which explains the additional risks associated with dental treatment during a pandemic
- You will see that our office will not have magazines, toys, or other items which could be difficult to disinfect, and we have changed our procedures to minimize the surfaces and items you will need to touch throughout your appointment
- We will take your forehead temperature before entering our treatment area, and we will require the you to wash your hands before treatment
- Your appointment times will be scheduled and staggered to maximize social distancing and minimize the wait time for you

Although you will see many changes during your appointment with us, one thing that will not change is our interest in your childā€™s development and oral health, and our appreciation for your trust in caring for your child!
We look forward to seeing you and your child and are happy to answer any questions you may have. Please call us at 402-423-3322, or you can keep up to date by vising our website at www.pediaticdentistrypc.net/covid-19.
Sincerely,
Brent D. Johnson, DDS, MS
