Thank you to everyone who came to our Sweet Sixteen exhibition last night! You are the reason we volunteer our time to make Tugboat possible. Thank you to everyone who has ever shown at our gallery, anyone who has taken time to visit the gallery, and thank you to all the designers, interns, and captains who makes this gallery possible.

And finally, we present one of the founders and current co-captains, Peggy Gomez, as one of our feature artists! Come say hi to udon Friday for our Sweet Sixteen show!

She makes site-specific installations and mixed media art that includes objects
found while walking her dogs. Foraging for cast off objects is an adventure. The
objects get carried home and processed into like-colored bins. If the piece calls for
something green and round, the green bin gets pulled out and the hunt begins.
Spaceships, privacy patterns, propellers and plant matter that is both alive and
possibly dead are recurring themes in Peggy's artwork. All have to do with the
idea of transitioning from A to B.

Bio:
Peggy Gomez is a Nebraska native that lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, an entrepreneur
– owner of Gomez Art Supply, Tugboat Gallery Co-Founder and Co-Captain, front
yard vegetable gardener and 4-season commuter bicyclist. She lives in a small
freshly painted pink house in the Near South neighborhood with her partner Pepe
and their dogs Jet and Marigold. Peggy graduated from UNL with a BFA in 1984 and received her MFA from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis in 1989.

Only two more days until Tugboat Gallery’s Sweet Sixteen show! Today we feature another founding member, Joey Lynch.

“My work is largely drawn from personal, political and social histories. The stylistic through line is a strong connection to the early punk rock aesthetic of cut and paste and photocopy
reproduction.”

Bio
A self-taught artist, Joey Lynch first leamed to screen print in high school to create merch for local Sioux Falls punk bands. In 2004, Joey co-founded Tugboat Gallery with Peggy Gomez and Jake Gillespie. He created and curated the nomadic Tugboat Presents: shows and a number of exhibitions for the Bemis Center's Underground space. For nearly a decade, Joey designed merch, posters and stage production for bands including Bright Eyes, Gillian Welch and Desaparecidos. For the past 8 years he has been the Installations and Facilities Director at
The Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE.

Just a few more days until the opening of our Sweet Sixteen show and now we are featuring the founders of Tugboat Gallery. First up is Jake Gillespie:

"Drawing makes me feel honest. Drawing makes me feel vulnerable. Drawing can sometimes make me feel brave. Drawing is how I’m trying to talk to you. Where you and I might connect, maybe somewhere in a drawing. Lately I often draw a narrative, or at least an implied narrative. I’m dyslexic, I often can’t trust what I’m seeing is actually what I’m seeing. Historically most of my work manipulates the viewers’ experience optically in both subtle and overt ways. I’ve been focusing on monochromatic graphite and graphite powder drawings. My hope is that less is more."

Our next co-captain featured in this Friday’s Sweet Sixteen exhibition is Nolan Tredway.

“Soft Mutations is a revisiting of a few sculptural prototypes, tests, and failures for my sculptures at Meow Wolf, reworking them with a kind and compassionate lens into new creatures with new purpose. It’s a practice of grace and forgiveness, a path forward, and a nod toward the endless possibilities for transformation.”

Bio
Found covered in moss near the Korvik River, Nolan was raised in the Great North by a mountain and a burning forest. He learned the art of storytelling from his time among the Volkos, before studying art at the University of Nebraska and Fundacion Ortega y Gasset in Toledo, Spain. His work has been featured locally at the Sheldon Museum of Art, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, KANEKO, Nebraska Governor's Residence, and Fred Simon Gallery. His work has been included nationally in exhibitions such as Currents New Mexico, Altered Aesthetics, and is part of the permanent exhibition at Meow Wolf Denver.

Our spotlight of co-captains continues with former captain Lisa Guevara. She’ll be one of the feature artists at our Sweet Sixteen show opening this Friday:

“I mix traditional media with readily accessible materials that would otherwise contribute to waste. I rely on my own physiological responses and improvisation to guide my creative decisions. Processes such as braiding, painting, and knot-tying help me achieve a flow state, while materials like glittery paper, acrylic paint, and dyed fabric focus my attention. The outcome is a ‘combine’ that reintroduces the sum of the parts as a new whole.”

Bio:
Lisa Guevara received her Bachelors in Fine Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2015, and an Associates in Web Programming from Austin Community College in 2023. She has been included in shows hosted by Petshop Gallery (Omaha, NE), Plug Projects (Kansas City, MO), Centro de Artes (San Antonio, TX), and Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos (San Marcos, TX). She has curated a number of shows in Tugboat Gallery (Lincoln, NE) and Spellerberg Projects (Lockhart, TX). Lisa currently lives and creates in San Marcos, Texas.
