On the morning of March 27, 2023, tragedy struck Lindenhurst Middle School when a 13-year-old student was the victim of a knife attack from a fellow student. Thankfully, due to the quick thinking and decisive action of Chief Mike DeGregorio of Lindenhurst Fire Department , the student’s life was saved.
Chief DeGregorio had been working onsite as the school safety officer, when he was alerted over his radio of the altercation occurring between the two students. He immediately rushed to the scene and found the victim bleeding profusely from his right leg while a teacher was attempting to render aid. Without hesitation, Chief DeGregorio removed his belt, using it as a tourniquet to staunch the bleeding, keeping the student alive until emergency medical services arrived.
"Chief Mike Degregorio embodies the bravery and selfless call to duty that lives inside every member of the fire and EMS service in Suffolk County,” said Patrick Beckley, Suffolk County Commissioner of Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services. “If it were not for his training and lack of due regard for his own safety, a family and the resilient community of Lindenhurst could have suffered a tremendous loss. It's incidents like this that remind us just how important the men and woman of our fire and EMS service truly are. It's my hope that at least one person looks at Mike's actions and is inspired to serve their community in the same capacity he and our other first responders do."
