Kathleen Grady Ringstad posted this in a local group yesterday and it's too good not to share here. We have the best lifeguards around!

A huge shoutout to the Gilgo Beach Lifeguards today! 📣📣📣
My nephew (13) and niece (11) were enjoying the surf when they were slowly but surely pulled into the rip current. I was standing right in front of them, in knee deep water, when they and I realized they were having trouble getting back to shore. My nephew very calmly called to me, “We need help”. Before I could even raise my hand to call the lifeguards—they had sprung into action.

And spring they did!

Unbeknownst to me, they had been carefully assessing the situation. There was a Guard already on the ground—just off my right shoulder—and when I turned to call them, I found additional Guards jumping from their stand. Three Guards were quickly in the water, with the fourth manning the rope to pull all in to safety. The whole scenario was over in less than 3 minutes.

The kiddies were happy to be on dry ground and we walked over to thank the team for their service. A Senior Guard told the kids they had done nothing wrong; he complimented my nephew for staying with his younger cousin—and told them both they had done the right thing in asking for help and for remaining calm the entire time. He added that they had had at least 25 rescues in the same spot over the previous few days. And we did indeed, see another rescue of a young boy, in the same spot, about 90 minutes later!

All of this is to say, a very gracious and grateful THANK YOU, for the hard work, training and attentiveness of this fantastic group of professionals! 🙏🏻❤️🌊

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Terence McSweeney, along with State Senator Monica R. Martinez, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Flotteron - 11th LD, Assemblyman Michael Durso and members of the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce were at Avocados North Babylon this afternoon to present the final fundraising tallies of over $10,400 for 18-year-old David Reisinger.

A few weeks ago, Paul Felleti and his partners at Avocados Kitchen came together with local dignitaries, school officials and members of the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce for a very special ribbon cutting ceremony and fundraiser for Reisinger.

Avocados Kitchen pledged to donate 30% of all proceeds during the event to the fund – which came out to $1,060.00. For those who couldn’t attend, they also set up and facilitated a GoFundMe online donation portal page, which accumulated an additional $9,340.00.

David is a recent graduate of North Babylon High School whose mother passed away during COVID and whose father is terminally ill with cancer. David graduated not only, with a Diploma from North Babylon HS but also with a certificate of completion from Boces as a Welder. David and his 3 brothers are hoping to stay in the family home and support each other through these trying times.

The funds raised from the grand opening celebration and the “GO FUND ME” fundraiser will be a great help to David starting the next phase of his life as a welder and to contribute to the family home. https://gofund.me/094d4d63

OPERATION CLEAN: Our Litter Response Team has collected over 100 tons of litter and debris since the start of April. That's enough to fill three garbage trucks!

Our crews are stepping up to clean up state and county roads because as Supervisor Schaffer said at a recent press conference, when family or friends are coming off the Southern State Parkway to visit, they shouldn't be greeted by mounds of litter.

The Litter Response Team has already assisted with the cleanup of over 175 locations, including the one pictured on Route 109 on the West Babylon/North Lindenhurst border.

If you see our crews working on the shoulders or medians of main roadways, please exercise caution when passing to ensure their safety. If you would like to report a problem spot that needs their attention, please file out this form: https://www.townofbabylon.com/FormCenter/Contact-Us-2/Report-a-Concern-35

Thank you for doing your part to keep Babylon beautiful!

A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Our crews have been out all morning accessing damage and flooding from the storm. If you do need to drive near the coast, take it very slow. Generating a "wake" will create waves that can cause flooding into nearby homes.

Many main and neighborhood roads are flooded this morning. It's important to take extra caution when you get behind the wheel.

✔️ Avoid driving into water of unknown depth.
✔️ Avoid moving water. Just 12 inches of water can float a small car.
✔️ Stay away from downed power lines, poles or equipment.
✔️ Avoid walking in flood water.

MAJOR COASTAL STORM IMPACTING TOWN: We are closely monitoring the severe storm that is bringing heavy rain, damaging winds and flooding to the region through Wednesday morning.

Town of Babylon crews are out in force to clear storm drains and monitor flooding effects. Please stay tuned to the latest forecast and take all necessary precautions.

Here are the current watches and warnings that have been issued:

• A coastal flood warning is now effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Residents in vulnerable communities should prepare for the potential of major coastal flooding (3-feet of inundation above ground).
• A high wind warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Expect sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 to 65 mph. The strongest winds are expected overnight.
• A flood watch is in effect until noon Wednesday for the entire island. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

The storm will be strong enough to potentially topple trees, bring down branches on wires and cause power outages. Never approach or drive over downed lines. Report them immediately to
PSEG Long Island's 24-hour Electric Service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.

Report an outage and receive status updates by texting OUT to PSEGLI (773454). You can also report your outage through the PSEG app or at psegliny.com/outages.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Terence McSweeney and ARPA Director Viscel Moore recently presented Pat Giudice and Jerome Bost a DSP Workforce Development grant in the amount of $49,500 for the IBEW Local 1049.
