The seed for establishing a “Central Alarm System” was planted in 1952 by the Town of Babylon Fire Departments. Each Fire Department was being dispatched by other various agencies. turing into establishing a “Suffolk County Police Department” and let it be known they would no longer want the responsibility of the Fire Departments. The Fire Departments formed a committee on February 25, 1960 to investigate a “Central Alarm System”. In January 1961 the commitment to a “Central Alarm System” was made by The Deer Park, Lindenhurst, North Lindenhurst, and The West Babylon Fire Departments. Over the next year, representatives from each of these Departments met to complete the working details. Cromarty”, A town resolution was later passed providing space in Babylon Town Halls basement to house “Babylon Central Fire Alarm”. It was determined that the committee would be responsible for the equipment, but that the provision for dispatchers would be met by attaining the service of a private contractor, “John Loll Enterprises”. John Loll began training his staff of 7 employees at Babylon Central Fire Alarm on July 15, 1962. The official startup of dispatching services was August 15, 1962 with Babylon Centrals First President Al Ettlinger of The Deer Park Fire Department overseeing operations. As the years passed the other Town of Babylon agencies joined Babylon Central Fire Alarm. Wyandanch Fire Company in February 1963, Babylon Fire Department in June 1970, North Amityville Fire Company in July 1970, North Babylon Fire Company in October 1974, Copiague Fire Department in December 1975, Wyandanch Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp in May 1997 and Amityville Fire Department in January 2022. As our membership has grown so has our call intake and responsibilities. In consideration of our increased responsibilities and staffing the committee decided to incorporate in 1978 and hire their staff directly. At this time we became “Babylon Central Fire Alarm and Rescue Corporation. Today Babylon Central handles approximately 23,000 emergency calls annually and another 35,000 non-emergency calls and both are on the rise. We currently employ 23 dispatchers, a Chief of Operations, Chief Supervisor and 2 Junior Supervisors to oversee all operations of the office. Babylon Central also operates a Board of Directors which includes 1 member from each member agency in turn communicate with our office to keep functionality and punctuality on point. Each one of our dispatchers are Emergency Dispatch Certified to give medical instruction to callers prior to emergency unit arrival and provide the Town of Babylon residents with the best and utmost professional service.

The 17th annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride is this Friday, July 19th!

Please take note of the route map as roving road closures will be in effect starting at 9:30 a.m. as the soldiers leave Babylon Town Hall and pass through our villages and hamlets.

Members of the community are invited and encouraged to show their patriotism by gathering anywhere along the route to cheer on the soldiers and riders as they pass through our town and make their way to Overlook Beach!

Telecommunicators Week 2024

Suffolk County Police, what is the address of your emergency? This is the first question you will be asked when dialing 911 for Fire and/or Rescue in Babylon Township. Once decided that Fire/Rescue is needed our phones will ring here at Babylon Central. In 2023 Babylon Central’s Emergency Communications Center received approximately 30,000 emergency calls for help along with another 35,000 non-emergency calls. Our highly trained and professional Emergency Medical Dispatchers were here to answer every single one of those calls.

COASTAL FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM TUESDAY TO 1 PM EST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...1 to 2 ft of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline with the Tuesday evening high tide cycle. 2 to 2 1/2 feet of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline with the Wednesday morning high tide
cycle. Locally 3 ft possible.

* WHERE...Northeast Suffolk, Southwest Suffolk, Southeast Suffolk and Southern Nassau Counties.

* WHEN...From 4 PM Tuesday to 1 PM EST Wednesday.

* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Widespread moderate flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline, particularly Wednesday morning. Expect 2 to 2 1/2 ft, locally 3 feet of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns and homes/businesses with basements near the waterfront. Vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays.

* SHORELINE IMPACTS...Large breaking waves of 15 to 20 ft along the oceanfront will result in widespread dune erosion and damage to dune structures. Scattered overwashes are expected, resulting in some flooding of roadways and vulnerable structures behind protective dunes. Isolated breaches or inundation of the barrier island is possible where dune structures have been severely compromised by previous storms.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Peak surge of 4 to 5 ft will likely be between times of high tide Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Tidal piling will likely inhibit the recession of water before the Wednesday AM high tide, which could cause locally major flooding for area from Freeport eastward. Of particular concern are areas along the eastern Great South Bay from Lindenhurst to Mastic and along the bay side of Fire Island, where west to southwest gale winds may pile waters Wednesday morning into afternoon along with 2 to 3 ft of wave action. Residents in vulnerable communities should prepare for the potential of major coastal flooding (3ft of inundation above ground).

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
