Keeping it Basic: Insulin Resistance

When we eat, the hormone insulin is released from the pancreas into the blood to help move glucose (sugar) from the blood into the cells so that the cells can use it for energy through out the body.

Blood sugar levels rise when ALL foods are consumed, but they rise more rapidly when Carbohydrates are taken in. As the digestive system release the glucose(sugar) from the food we eat, raising the glucose levels in the blood, therefore signaling the pancreas to release insulin to bring down the glucose levels in the blood, and help move it into the cells…

Overtime, this system can fail if the cells become “resistant” to large amounts of insulin trying to get into the cells. There’s many reasons why this can happen.

But how our body/cells converts food into energy it can use is a major biological function. So very helpful to understand it. Be well!
