"Putting Arkansas on the Map!"
We are proud to announce that our TSS Office of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) increased its Geospatial Maturity Assessment Grade from a B+ to an A-. You can see the report below. Regarding Orthoimagery Leaf-on, Arkansas has a policy that any digital orthoimagery acquired by the state must be leaf-off. In a state with a lot of deciduous forest canopy, leaf-off better supports county assessors, public safety, 911, etc.
Kudos to the team at GIS and all of our agency partners for their efforts! This increase is a testament to all of their hard work.
We are so proud of our Survey Team. They are on a mission to be the national leader in the preservation of the State’s public land survey system.
The State’s GIS community unites at this event every other year. We look forward to being there and participating.

Arkansans who are interested in finding where your home address is compared to new election Districts like Justice of Peace Districts, School Board Zones or Municipal Wards we’ve got a resource for you. Our Find My Districts map is updated and located here: https://gis.arkansas.gov/viewer.php
This resource is very easy to use. Enter your address like this [ 501 Woodlane St, Little Rock, AR, 72201 ] and the system will navigate the map to your location. Or, if for some reason the system cannot locate your address, you can also navigate using the + or - button to zoom in or out, and then click the map to drag it to your area and continuing zooming in to your location. Once there click your spot on the map. A District Info box will list all the election districts for that location. The District Info box will list both the new House and Senate Districts that will be used for the 2022 general elections and the House or Senate member in the current districts that remain in effect until the election.

56 days and counting! Please ask everyone you know if they completed their Census? If they have not give them the number below to call in their response. 1-844-330-2020
9-1-1. Those three simple numbers represent a lifeline that Arkansans depend on every day. Did you know the largest percentage of wireless 9-1-1 revenue that funds your 9-1-1 center is distributed by the Arkansas 9-1-1 Board on a basis of population? Supporting these call centers is critical. Responding to the 2020 Census is a quick way to ensure your 9-1-1 center receives its fair share of that funding. Shape your future, start here. Everyone counts!. Community leaders here's your chance to make it happen. https://arcounts.org/census-summit/
Governor Asa Hutchinson signed the Public Safety Act of 2019 into law today. Lead sponsors of the Act Representative Michelle Gray and Senator Jason Rapert were at his side. County officials from across the state also filled the room. This Act marks the beginning of major 911 reform by establishing a new 911 Board, to provide leadership on the implementation of Next Generation 911 capabilities in Arkansas. At the core of these systems will be GIS data provided by City, County and State levels. The Arkansas GIS Office looks forward to playing a significant role in this implementation.
Thanks NWS's Tabitha Clarke, Dan Koch, Jeff Hood, & Jim Reynolds, for the great tour and GIS presentation today! My office couldn't have better folks for partners.

Municipal Boundaries Update | Arkansas GIS Office
Over two years ago the Office launched a major outreach effort in partnership with the Arkansas Municipal League and Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin to improve the accuracy of the municipal boundaries as our State gets ready for the 2020 Census. Cities across Arkansas have made numerous boundary changes, anticipating their populations will grow in 2020. We've been committed to ensuring those changes are incorporated into the 2020 census block boundary and we are not letting up. Today we announced another small round of municipal boundary changes. http://gis.arkansas.gov/2018/10/15/municipal-boundaries-update-9/

Central Arkansas Astronomical Society
Have you also heard it's going to be a pretty fall here in the Natural State? Sure hope so--and maybe this map will help for planning a trip.
There is a mistaken belief that the only thing that astronomers do is look up at other worlds beyond our own. Not true, most of us are just as interested in the many wondrous things that can be seen right here on our very own rock in space as it moves around our local star. And it’s that very same motion around the Sun, combined with the fact that our planet is tilted upon its axis, that we get to experience seasons and all the splendid things that come with it. I think that a little knowledge of astronomy can offer you a picture of nature on a larger scale than most people are generally accustomed to.

Understanding and Using ACS Data: What All Data Users Need to Know
The new American Community Survey Handbook is here! If you map Census ACS data, you should read this. It'll help you, in part, to determine which data is most reliable. This is especially important for smaller geographies in rural areas.
https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/guidance/handbooks/general.html?eml=gd&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery

An Opportunity to Make Every Vote Count
A good little article about GIS and elections. For more detail, click on the NSGIC hyperlinks to see how GIS leaders are supporting geo-enabled elections.
"We have time before the next round of redistricting to put the proper infrastructure and statutory authority in place to mitigate manual-entry errors like those that occurred last year in Virginia. And there is an additional benefit to these improvements: A more accurate process may uncover old errors. In Fluvanna County, Va., for example, when GIS was used to confirm county borders officials found that a couple had been assigned to, and voting in, the wrong district for almost 40 years."
http://www.governing.com/gov-institute/voices/col-election-districts-voter-placement-gis.html
governing.com Manual placement of voters in districts is a recipe for error. The solution is to enhance the use of GIS in the process.
Data Driven Transportation
Check out what our friends at ArDOT have to say about GIS. We share their sentiments--GIS has the ability to increase transparency and efficiency, among other things. As practitioners, we all aim to learn more about this amazing and ever-changing technology. Plus, if you didn't already know, GIS is fun to do! We're also looking forward to seeing where GIS will lead Arkansas next.

Can you believe we've made over 140 updates to the municipal boundary changes layer for historic boundary changes? That's 140+ annexations from 1890 to 2014 that needed to be documented and mapped here at the AGISO. And yes, you read that right--1890! Overall, we've made over 350+ changes since taking on this important task!
Click the link to see the 1890 document. Looks like a Joseph T. Robinson signed it---surely that's not THE Joe T. Robinson!http://gis.arkansas.gov/docs/annexations/maynard_incorporation_1890.pdf
