With milk supply there can be a delicate balance between an oversupply of milk, adequate supply, and undersupply. The Haakaa can be a super handy tool to help with collecting milk during feedings and to aid in relieving engorgement. Applying the Haakaa with strong suction may help collect more milk, but it's also important to keep in mind the possibility that it may be either keeping you in a state of oversupply or expressing milk for your freezer stash that your baby should otherwise be drinking at that feeding in the case of a sufficient milk supply or undersupply. No two mom/baby duos are the same so what works for one mom may not be ideal for another mom. Additionally, the Haakaa may be great at some times of the day and not ideal at others. We'd love to help if you find yourself unsure about how best to use a Haakaa in your unique breastfeeding journey.

We know how common the concerns of milk supply can be for a breastfeeding mom. Perceived or actual low milk supply is one of the main reasons for discontinuing breastfeeding. Milk production begins in the first few days with a cascade of hormonal initiators. It then becomes a supply and demand process in which frequent, effective breast emptying with breast compression and massage is the primary way to maintain or boost supply. If there is not an issue with the way your milk supply is being managed, a galactagogue can be something to consider. We carry and **biesuperfoods here at Expressly For You!

We want you to know, mama, that your comfort is a very important factor when it comes to breastfeeding. Your comfort is also going to help your milk flow freely. It's so easy to bring the b**b to baby in order to get all positioning and latching just right for baby and then feel stuck slumped forward with your shoulders and back aching. If positioning is difficult to make comfortable, a pillow for support may be very helpful for you. It can also help free up a hand to coordinate all of the moving parts if latching is difficult. The My Brest Friend pillow provides support for your back and won't slide away from you as you nurse. Let us know if we can help you with positioning and latching technique.
We are here for you mama!

If you are latching and feeding baby at the breast, we highly recommend spending as much time as possible continuing that before returning to work. Many moms get overwhelmed thinking that the freezer full of breastmilk is the prime goal before starting back at work. In reality, the goal is much simpler. Pump ahead to have at least enough frozen milk that can be used for the first day back to work. Once at work, the goal will be to pump enough during the day to be used for the next day. The aim after returning to work will be that between pumps at work and breastfeeds at home you'll still be expressing around 8 times in 24 hours. If you are having difficulty pumping enough, give us a call. There are tips with bottle feeding and milk supply that we can help troubleshoot with you.

You're doing an amazing job mama!
Colostrum is the very first milk. It is yellow and sticky and though it often only shows up in small drops, it is loaded with goodness and ready to supply your baby with high amounts of protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and probiotics. Plus, the antibodies are higher in colostrum to bring baby the immunity strength against first exposures to viruses. The small volume of colostrum compared to mature milk is perfect for your baby's tiny stomach size which starts out about the size of a marble. Call us if you'd be interested in meeting with us prenatally in preparation for breastfeeding your baby!
Just as we do not schedule out our times to drink throughout the day, babies also have unique rhythms and feeding needs that may change from day to day. Watching your baby rather than the clock is the best way to know when to feed. Early feeding cues include smacking their lips, rooting to the side, and putting fingers in their mouths. Crying is typically a later sign of hunger. The goal is to feed your baby 8 or more times in 24 hours.
How many can relate to the fact that everywhere you go people comment that "you've got your hands full!"??? As accurate as that may be, the beauty in it is all that our hearts are holding!
We offer rentals for the hospital grade Medela Symphony pump. This is a great pump to help establish or boost your milk supply if baby is not consistently and effectively nursing from the breast. Call us today for pricing and details (501) 202-7378.
When you have questions about if baby is getting enough breastmilk, the answer will be in the diapers and weight gain. On day one of life baby should have at least 1 p**p and 1 p*e. On day two, at least 2 p**ps and 2 p*es. On day three, at least 3 of each. Baby is expected to have a small amount of weight loss in the first few days and once your breastmilk begins to transition from colostrum to mature milk around day 3, the weight will begin increasing and diapers will be 6-8 wets and at least 2 p**ps per day. Once abundant milk is in, we'll be checking to see if baby gains about 7 ounces per week. Let us help answer your questions as you navigate effective removal of milk and adequate intake! (501) 202-7378
Having a pain in one area of one breast may mean you have a clogged milk duct. What to do?? Treat early and treat consistently. At the sign of discomfort begin applying heat and using firm massage of the area before each feeding/pumping session. In between feedings, ice can help decrease inflammation. Call today to speak with one of our lactation consultants if you're experiencing breast discomfort during.
Normalizing breastfeeding in our culture will grow positive effects exponentially into the next generations!
Here is a special tip for getting baby latched deeply! Use your free hand to shape your breast into a sandwich shape for baby's mouth. Imagine the direction a sandwich would go into your mouth if you were having a meal (corner to corner in your mouth); imitate that shape with your breast to line up with the direction of baby's mouth. This will help baby latch deeply for most efficient breastfeeding and help latching become more comfortable for you! Considering the position of this mom in the picture, using her right hand in a U-shape hold under her breast would create the sandwich shaped breast for baby's mouth.
We'd love to help you with latching in a one on one in-person or virtual appointment with our lactation consultants! Give us a call at (501) 202-7378.
