This morning our Senior Director of Development, Gina Mascaro and our Marketing & Communications Manager, Jessica Mouloudi presented for last seminar on Alumni & Member Giving in their six part series. We dove deeper into key strategies to engage Alumni & Members in the nonprofit space and how to be impactful leaders in our organizations to continue spreading the mission/visions to others. Thank you to all of the nonprofit leaders that filled the room and to TNP for the opportunity to connect with others in this space!

We mourn the loss of former Long Beach City Manager, LBCC Hall of Famer, and former LBCC Foundation Board of Governors Member, Jerry Miller. His legacy will continue in the City of Long Beach and through those he influenced greatly. May he rest in peace.

After months of planning, the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Educators Collective 1st Annual Symposium was held on the LBCC campus. The LBCC Foundation is proud to support the NHPI Educators Collective and the collaboration between other colleges and universities. The NHPI Educators Collective is a group of professionals that are committed to centering NHPI identities and authentic narratives to foster the advancement of NHPI leadership while cultivating relationships in community with NHPI professionals and students through networking and mentorship.

This week, we dedicated the Nursing and Allied Health Learning Center on the LAC Campus in honor of Doctors Sabira and Nasir Tejani. The Tejani’s have been long-time Doctors in Long Beach and continue to give back to the LBCC Nursing Program. The naming of this Learning Center is part of their endowment to provide scholarships and programatic support to purchase supplies, books, and other resources for the Learning Center space. Thank you Dr. Sabira and Dr. Nasir Tejani for all you’ve done to not only support the Long Beach community, but for continuing your legacy and impact on LBCC students.

LBCC’s own Superintendent-President Dr. Mike Muñoz has been recognized by the Los Angeles Times as one of the Most Influential People in the Los Angeles Area as a College Champion of Marginalized Students. Dr. Muñoz, calls his background of homelessness and additional hardships, “...[his] superpower.” He explains that, “It allows me to be radically empathetic and radically compassionate to people who have had these experiences. It really grounds me in my leadership.” Dr. Muñoz knows firsthand that students need support to succeed. With Dr. Muñoz’s leadership, LBCC offers many avenues of support for students and contributes to the college’s mission of being inclusive, supportive, innovative, and cultivating synergy. The St. Mary Medical Center Foundation Board approved a $2 Million Endowment to support the LBCC Nursing Program. This is a collaboration between St. Mary Medical Center Foundation and the Long Beach City College Foundation. Every year, funds will be awarded to ten scholarship recipients (St. Mary Scholars) at $2,500 each for students that will be entering into the nursing field. Long Beach City College was pleased to award the 1st Annual St. Mary Medical Center Endowed Scholarship to Hilary DeLaCruz. As a first generation, Mexican American student, Hilary’s passion for helping others through vulnerable times and wanting to make a difference by advocating for others has driven her education in Nursing at LBCC.

The LBCC Foundation sponsored LBCC student, Braidyn Ortiz’s recent trip to Orlando, FL where he was named the California State Champion after taking the Micosoft Office Spacialist Exam and invited to attend the Certiport Micosoft Office Spacialist US National Championship! Braidyn came in 2nd place and awarded a $2,000 scholarship as well as a brand new Surface Pro! Congratulations Braidyn and thank you to our very own Shyra Compton in the LBCC Scholarship Office for accompanying Braidyn in his travel to the US National Championship.

Yesterday, we kicked off the very first day of summer with our LBCC Summer Camp Orientation at the North Long Beach Higher Education Center. In collaboration with Pools of Hope and Children’s Theater of Long Beach, this year we have 180 campers over the course of 6 weeks coming to LBCC to utilize our KLAC facilities.
