Good morning! This week we have a couple events and it’d be great to see some old and new faces. This Thursday, singer-songwriter and friend Clementine will do a short solo set at 6:30pm. And on Saturday, Glossy Mistakes from Madrid will have a label pop-up from 3–8pm. Set your phone reminders and join us! 🗓✍🏽

As usual, the shop will be open during regular hours, and with plenty of records to check out, both new and used. Just received copies of the new Meridian Brothers as well as the Merci Yaya Bongo compilation among many other things. 👨🏻‍🌾

All the way from Madrid, Spain, we’re excited to have .mistakes for an in-store label pop-up and listening party on Saturday, July 20th from 3–8pm. We’ll listen to selections from the label’s ever-growing catalog which includes artists such as Akira Ito, Finis Africae, Stu Cisco and Stevia aka Susumu Yokota, among many others.

Glossy Mistakes will be accompanied throughout the day by our friends Eric, Romy and George playing all kinds of deep cuts from their personal collections. As usual, we’ll have complimentary sparkling water and the AC blasting at its coldest!

Without a doubt is high on our list of the best record shops in Los Ángeles. Long before we moved from Puerto Rico we were already getting records from MA and they definitely influenced our shop as it stands today.

A quick glimpse at last May’s live in-store performance by Lina Tullgren & Jesse Perlstein. We’ve been too busy and forgot to share! We still have copies of both artists tapes available at the shop.

Coffin Prick’s ‘Side Splits’ record release party at the shop last Friday was a lot of fun! We listened to the album’s extended version with some cuts that didn’t make it to the LP (including a Phew remix that’s probably my favorite). Both performances by John Herndon and Dream_Mega were excellent. Plus the veggie tray was delicious (I love cherry tomatoes). For those interested, we have copies of ’s ‘Side Splits’ available at the shop.

✷ OJALÁ OPENING ✷

On Saturday, June 29th from 3–8pm join us for the soft opening of Ojalá Books & Stationery on 5405 N Figueroa St (next door to estuario). Ojalá is a Puerto Rican + Syrian/Lebanese owned business focused on books about art, architecture, ecology, design, theory, politics and much more. They’ll also be expanding to offer a variety of stationery and other goods.

Ojalá will also be collaborating with .books.music to include a selection of rare art books, craft anthologies, sound journals, countercultural documents, modern art catalogs, and esoteric manuscripts, among other things.

A few people know this already but we want to publicly share that since earlier this year .la has been working towards opening their own bookshop on the space right next to estuario and it’s finally happening! If all goes according to plan, they’ll be able to open their doors sometime next month. For this they’ll also be partnering with the exceptional .books.music. More info soon!

As you can imagine, this is all being done out of pocket, paycheck to paycheck; there’s no crowdfunding campaign or anything like that. But if you’d like to help, you can buy a book or two from their extended pop-up at our shop which will last for approximately another three weeks.

They’ll also be expanding to include more stationery as well as other goods. If you’re in Highland Park, swing by the shop to get a taste of what they’re doing!

This last weekend .la was part of the literary fair. While Magaly covered the shop, Souraya and I did the fair. It was a lot of fun plus it was great to see so many familiar faces and meet new people. If you’ve never been to Heavy Manners in Echo Park, we highly recommend visiting asap. May has always been my favorite month and it’s about to begin! Back home in PR it’s basically the beginning of the rainy season which I loved (cue “Happy When It Rains” by The Jesus and Mary Chain); plus it meant the end of the school semester (cue “F**k School” by The Replacements). In any case, we’re open as usual this week, air quality is alright, and there’s cold seltzer in the mini-fridge. I’ll be taking photos every other day (let me know if you’d like your portrait taken next to the giant blue mushroom). There’s a listening party on Thursday and maybe we’ll be at a market on Sunday. I kinda lost track of where I was going with this, but basically come visit, tell us a funny story, try Delicia’s new Chilindrina torta, grab a few records that the youtube algorithm will never recommend and let’s talk about the last season of True Detective.

On Thursday, May 2nd we’ll have a listening party and pop-up for .us & who will be presenting Duplicators #2: Miguel Herrerro’s lolantha. Duplicators is a series initiated by Tomorrow Today to make scarce, forgotten or hard to find media that they feel has cultural, political or artistic relevance in the present context, newly available in small imperfect editions. Tomorrow Today is a bookstore and rapid response press exploring radical histories & possible futures. Universal Freeing Object is a homestyle tape label releasing local esoteric music.
