To whom it may concern,

As a pilot who has flown (or intends to fly) a hang glider or paraglider from Kagel Mountain to Sylmar Flight Park, I strongly object to the proposed conveyor system for removing sediment from the Pacoima Reservoir.

While I understand the necessity of the proposed project and its objective to restore the reservoir to full water capacity, I am concerned about the possible placement of a sediment conveyor system that would run the length of the wash from the dam to the settling grounds, three miles to the south.

Please find an alternate system. We, as a community, do not want to be exposed to the dust and particulates that the sediment would create along our flight path. The noise pollution will also be considerable.

Please find an alternative method that does not pose a threat to Sylmar Hang Gliding Association.

On this day in 1989, Katherine Yardley, 42, flew 163.89 miles, from Walt’s Point, in the Owens, to Gabbs Valler, NV. She flew for 9.5 hours on a Moyes GTR 182 and broke the previous distance record.

I am so excited! The SHGA BOD approved of the idea of creating, "from one group of winged creatures to another," a Monarch Butterfly Way Point/Landing Zone! We'll have 3 different types of Ca. native Asclepius growing in a small garden. If successful, we'll expand their Way Point / LZ to cover a wider range. Sure hope we don't have any landing conflicts!

The monarch population is dwindling fast and, as insects, they aren't covered by the Ca. Endangered Species Act. "The Fish and Wildlife Service has given the Western Monarch population a 96% to 100% chance of collapsing within 50 years." (LA Times, "Save the Monarch Butterfly" nd)
Theodore Payne Foundation in So. Cal. has organic native Asclepius seeds and also sells seedlings, in mid-Spring.

Membership Meeting 12/30/2020

There will be a CLUB MEETING for the entire membership on 12/30 at 6:00 pm. This "meeting" is usually held at the Christmas Party, which we are unfortunately not having this year. During this meeting, we will announce the new board of directors, talk about what has been done this year to enhance member benefits, and give members a chance to ask questions and make suggestions to the BOD. This will be a "Zoom" meeting, so if you would like to attend, please contact Greg Angsten, who is hosting the meeting. He will email you a link to allow you to enter

If you are a member of SHGA, and you have NOT received a ballot, please contact me so I can get you one. There is a bylaw change that requires a majority vote so it is very important that we hear from as many members as possible on this issue!

Due to cold weather this weekend, our movie will be this Thursday (11/5). The movie will be Coco, a 2017 American computer-animated fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on an original idea by Lee Unkrich, it is directed by him and co-directed by Adrian Molina. The film's voice cast stars Anthony Gonzalez, Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía and Edward James Olmos.
