The West LA VA community town center survey results are in! In this video, VAGLAHS Medical Center Director Rob Merchant introduces the results of a comprehensive survey that gathered Veteran feedback about what they’d like to see on campus including in the future Veteran town center.
As the campus transforms into a first-of-its-kind community with at least 1,200 units of housing for formerly homeless Veterans and their families, VA sought Veteran input on what amenities, services, and social spaces can contribute to a thriving town center and supportive community. This invaluable feedback will be used to inform the planning process moving forward.
This video shares the top requests from the survey, as well as interviews with Veterans who currently live on campus as they share their feedback and vision for the future.

This tiny hummingbird was spotted on the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center north campus in the Domiciliary quad. Hummingbirds are known for their small size and aerial acrobatics. They have the ability to fly quickly, stop instantly, hover, and move in all directions. They can beat their wings more than 3,000 times per minute and in a figure-eight pattern.
As a group, hummingbirds are more colorful than all other bird species put together. Their feathers showcase searing magentas, shimmering purple-and-green, night-sky violets, and iridescent rainbows that even incorporate ultraviolet colors humans can’t see.
What else sets them apart from other birds? Their dazzling colors are created not by pigments but by precisely sized, perfectly arranged, microscopic bubbles in the structure of their feathers.
Keep your eyes peeled for these little creatures flying through the air the next time you visit campus!

Precision medicine accounts for individual differences in patients’ environment, genetics, and lifestyles, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. A VA GLA researcher reviewed case studies on how Geriatric medicine can benefit from integrating precision medicine to treat older adults. This paper highlights that Geriatricians are used to highly individualized care and are well-placed to address barriers to implement precision medicine into practice.
