The project, funded by NASA's MOSAICS program, also offers valuable mentorship opportunities and a summer internship at JPL for our students. Excited to share that Cal State LA was featured in Los Angeles Times for our partnership with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, bridging the gap between engineering and astrobiology. This collaboration began in 2014 with an internship at JPL and has now led to a grant from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to support six student internships over the next two years. This is a testament to our commitment to expanding opportunities in STEM education!

Cal State LA has been honored with the AASCU Excellence and Innovation Award for our Prison Graduation Initiative (PGI), the first in-person bachelor’s degree program for incarcerated students in California! 🌟

Cal State LA has received a $370,000 state grant to develop a new program focused on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) student achievement!
Part of an $8 million appropriation from Assembly Bill (AB) 190, this program will support AANHPI transfer students, improve retention rates, reverse declining enrollment trends, and enhance outreach and recruitment. Funding will also support AANHPI-focused campus entities like the APISRC and the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies.
We're excited to create more opportunities for our AANHPI students and foster a more inclusive community! 🌟👏

Cal State LA's College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology was thrilled to host the 2024 LAunchPad Summer Program this past week! 🎉 We welcomed 45 students from 19 local high schools to this program that aims to boost the number of underrepresented students pursuing careers in STEM fields.
Participants dove into workshops, lectures, and hands-on activities led by Cal State LA faculty, with support from industry professionals. Students gained practical skills in engineering and computing to tackle real-world challenges. They also had the opportunity to partner with Cal State LA’s Charging Eagles competition team to design and build mini electric vehicles to learn engineering principles behind electric cars and compete in various tasks.

🎓 Congratulations to 2024 graduate Morgan Sjoerdsma! 🎓
Morgan is the most decorated golfer in the university's history and has consistently set new standards for excellence. She is ready to take the next step towards a career as an educator and high school golf coach, determined to help her future pupils unlock their potential by learning to embrace life’s challenges.
Morgan graduated from the College of Natural and Social Sciences with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. She is now pursuing a Master of Arts in Educational Technology at her alma mater. A recipient of Cal State LA’s prestigious Billie Jean King Female Athlete of the Year Award, Morgan has excelled both on the course and in the classroom. She has earned repeated academic recognition at the school, conference, and national levels. This summer, she became the first player in university history to earn Academic All-America honors three times.
She is a true testament to hard work, dedication, and the spirit of embracing challenges. 🌟👏

At 15 years old, Vedagna Sarabu is the youngest graduating senior in Cal State LA’s Class of 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor in Law and Society. 🎓🌟
Starting her university journey at age 11 through the Early Entrance Program, Vedagna's passion for law blossomed as she aspired to help individuals and families navigate legal challenges. During her time at Cal State LA, she volunteered as a tutor for gifted children and middle schoolers and gained hands-on experience as a law clerk at a workers' compensation firm.
A Dean’s List student with special recognition in the Honors College and a certificate of achievement from the Early Entrance Program’s Honors Academy, Vedagna is now heading to Chapman University’s Dale E. Fowler School of Law on a full scholarship to pursue her juris doctor degree.
In her spare time, she continues her passion of writing books and is exploring the themes of redemption in her stories.

Jorge Rivas-Raygoza, a 2024 Cal State LA graduate, inspires youth through dance. 🎓🌟 He earned his bachelor's degree in theatre from the College of Arts and Letters. His love for dance began at age five during a celebration of the Virgen de Guadalupe in his Mexican hometown. Though he paused dancing after moving to the U.S., he reignited his passion in 10th grade and became a professional dancer before joining the university.
Jorge's greatest achievement is founding Ballet Bravo in 2014, a dance company that blends ballet and folklórico to inspire youth to express their artistry, creativity, and cultural heritage. Ballet Bravo, part of his nonprofit Youth Culture Moves the World, welcomes boys and girls of all ethnicities.

At just 19 years old, Jordan O’Kelley has graduated from with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a minor in mathematics and will head to West Virginia University in the fall to pursue a Ph.D in Physics.
Enrolling via the University's Early Entrance Program after middle school, O'Kelley has been involved in neurodiverse advocacy, has conducted research on organic molecules in space, and earned an Outstanding Oral Presentation Award.
“Math and physics are beautiful in a very unique way where, after studying it a while, it begins to provide a way of understanding the world and everything in it,” he said.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is the oldest known U.S. celebration of the abolition of slavery, and marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free.
As we reflect on the significance of this moment in history, we do so with hope and resolve to consistently strive for a more just and inclusive society, together.
In observance of Juneteenth, Cal State LA is closed today, Wednesday, June 19.
Remote classes and operations will continue through June 23, with a resumption of in-person activities on Monday June 24.

Janneth Najera graduated from with a Master of Arts in Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies last month, and will soon begin a Ph.D. program in education with a focus on policy and leadership at the University of California, Berkeley.
At Cal State LA, she has advocated for students via educational policy and aspires to continue her advocacy work as a professor, serving students like the ones she sat side-by-side with in the classroom.
"That's where I can relate to the students--working class, caregivers, first-generation college students. I would love to teach at a CSU campus."
