Situated on the Delaware River Waterfront, this project recalls the histories of the textile and shipping industries that dominated the of the region. The artwork’s title, Weaver’s Knot: Sheet Bend is comprised of two names traditionally used to describe the same knot. The “Weaver’s knot” name derives from its historic use in textile mills. The “sheet bend” or “sheet knot” was use on sailing vessels for bending ropes to sails ( traditionally referred to as sheets).

The artwork takes the form of a giant knot constructed in stainless steel spheres that are suspended overhead from tall poles suggestive of the sail and “cargo masts” that once operated on the boats and wharves at the River Trail site.

The work draws a connection between the industrial past and technological present of Philadelphia. Stainless steel, polished to a mirrored finish forms the spheres that comprise the knot. This decidedly contemporary material reflects the surrounding landscape as well as the viewer’s own image; visitors will see themselves reflected within dozens of spheres.

Thanks to for engineering and for software. And, of course

Some cosmographic couture shot with my iPhone. In the spirit of illusionistic cupolas, this is a portrait of the heavens mapped onto a catenary dome of fabric. It depicts the sky over the antipode (location on the opposite side of the globe) of Minneapolis.
These are the first images of it installed atop the seven story glass tower at headquarters. It functions like an urban-scaled mirror-ball, reflecting light by way of more than 500,000 “stars” made of mirror polished aluminum. To embroider and sew it required the dexterity and craft of couturiers.
We worked with stellar collaborators: —custom software design, Sean’s Embroidery, Vernon — embroidery, Phillips Drapery, Pasadena - sewing. —form-finding. Physicist of Caltec an d JPL —guidance. and his —documentation.
BNS team: James Jones - Project Manager, Forster Rudolph , and Debbie McAfee
This project was possible because of the commitment and hard work of the super-stars at - Joanna Lindell, Kira Lapinsky, Dakota Passariello, and Terry Rasmussen. Not to mention the wonderful Thrivent AV team and the rest of the crew in Minneapolis — a cosmic 💫✨sized thank you! 🙏🏻

Own a piece of history, own your own Giant Sequoia Home®

In the early years of the Giant Sequoia Estates®, the founding families of Sierra Development selected the very best uncharred redwoods to carve their homes. These properties, minutes from the bustle of downtown Hume, have never been offered before and are simply some of the very best available. The largest private trees in the Little Boulder Creek Grove sit high up on Rough Fire Lane in the former Sequoia National Monument. On clear days, the top floors offer unobstructed views of the Hume skyline and the community of Unburnt, but also sweeping 180 degree panoramas from the Fresno Desalination Plant to the Iron Dome launch site atop Mt. Whitney. These rare old growth “Arbor Salvage®” homes can be expanded to up to 6,000 square feet. Imagine sitting on the deck of your new home watching a rocket launch from Mt. Whitney or observing the fires and the abundant wild boars as you make your plans for the days activities.

All properties are equipped with Foaming FireDefense®, the premier provider of advanced fire defense and home wildfire protection products in the U.S. By utilizing aerospace-grade materials, FireDefense delivers lasting, high-temperature fire protection for your investment and helps to prevent the ignition and spread of fire for years.

Opening day of the Delaware River Trail in Philadelphia and the public debut for Weavers Knot, Sheet Bend . It sits between the Cherry Street Pier and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Special thanks to for commissioning the project and for making it happen.

Situated on the Delaware River Waterfront, this artwork recalls the histories of the textile industry and cargo shipping that dominated the region for hundreds of years. The art- work’s title, Weaver’s Knot: Sheet Bend is comprised of two names traditionally used to describe the same knot. The “Weaver’s knot” name derives from its historic use in textile mills. The “sheet bend” or “sheet knot” was use on sailing vessels for bending ropes to sails ( traditionally referred to as sheets).

The work draws a connection between the industrial past and technological present of Philadelphia. Stainless steel (316L grade), polished to a mirrored finish forms the spheres that comprise the knot. This decidedly contemporary material reflects the surrounding landscape as well as the viewer’s own image; visitors will see themselves reflected within dozens of spheres.
Thank you to for custom software and for engineering, and for welding.

We call this project Gordian Knot. Lieutenant Mustardseed welds two balls together, forever. Each joint requires two continuous TIG welds, 360 degree around cylindrical joints between the spheres.

Our day trip to Marble, Colorado, got me thinking about working with marble.

Marble is the location of a historic Yule Marble quarry along the mountains that began operations in the late 19th century, and from which the town draws its name. It has been used for the Tomb of the Unknowns, as well as for parts of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and civic buildings in San Francisco. It was also used for the construction of the Equitable Building, a historically important early skyscraper in New York City.

The marble of the quarry is considered to be of exceptional quality, praised as one of the purest marbles ever quarried and a rival to classical Italian and Greek marble. It is nearly pure calcite marble with minor inclusions of mica, quartz, and feldspar, and has irregularly shaped calcite grains ranging from 100 to 600 micrometers in diameter. According to physical tests of the marble, its strength is comparable to marble typically used in building construction.

“Suspension” is a name I gave to an ongoing series of installations that we make with thousands of thin, painted chains hanging in precise proximity to one other. They are somewhere between emptiness and object - a kind of dense atmosphere of color. When I visit Utah, my eye spends a lot of time scanning the landscape. I wanted to marry my fascination with landscape to a Suspension at Davis Tech. We began Above the Ploughman’s Highest Line with an aerial image depicting the shore of the Great Salt Lake which we abstracted to become a stack of horizontal bands that permeate the Suspension.
