Fascinating article about using whole trees for structural members (rather than milling them into precise building shapes). Apparently, “When you leave a tree unmilled and with the outer fibers intact, it is 50 percent stronger than sawed timber with the same cross-sectional properties,”

More good news on the algae front......"A whopping 2 gigatons of carbon dioxide would no longer be pumped into the atmosphere each year and more than 250 million additional tons of carbon dioxide would be pulled out of the atmosphere and stored in these materials if all cement-based construction worldwide were replaced with biogenic limestone cement."

We got some cool aerial photos from for one our upcoming projects together! This little mid-century gem was originally designed by Robert F. Boyle, an award winning production designer who lived in it with his family. The house has remained mostly untouched, which is exciting for us but it’s definitely in need of some TLC. We will be working with the new owners to restore and modernize the home to its former glory. Disclaimer: these photos are “pre-“ everything (pre-brush clearing, pre-new siding, etc.) The team will working on restoring the hillside and making it functional. Even with the overgrown trees, the butterfly roof holds it own next to its mega mansion neighbor. (📸: on the drone)

Realized we have so many photos of our Covina Hillside project that we haven’t shared. A skylight over the stairwell was used to create a beam of light that would cascade down the stairs into the lower level throughout the day. 📸:
Sometimes the drywall phase can feel so peaceful. Excited to share tile and flooring updates at Blue Betty, our project.
Happy to introduce our new project Arroyo, a 9-unit multi-family development. Prioritizing well-being for tenants, Arroyo has an open air corridor that acts as a shared atrium allowing for more natural light and some greenery 🌿
If you didn’t know, sometimes we write little blog posts. And sometimes we write about the confusing process of getting projects permitted in Los Angeles. If your brain ever looks like this 🌀 after navigating any city website, then our latest post is for you. Horizon House emphasizes its horizontal planes as the name suggests. The upper floor sprawls out onto the outdoor deck, acting as an extension for the main living and kitchen space. When thinking about this upper space, we wanted any future residents to be able to take advantage of their outside time. That’s the whole reason for living in Malibu right? Therefore the deck is big enough to watch the sunset with your 12 closest friends, or you can keep it to yourself and do yoga with your dog.
Horizon House uses closely spaced columns and beams to create a trellis, which filters sun onto the large upper deck. To accommodate the steep slope, the back deck is cantilevered around the lap pool.
Our second project was designed as the counterpart to its neighbor. This is Horizon House whose form follows the horizon in the distance ☀️
Vertical House blending in with its surroundings ⛰
Calm mornings at Vertical House
Who doesn’t love a minimal floor plan graphic? The unique shape of the pool and spa follow the buildable area of the natural grade. Not pictured is the garage/basement level.
An interior look at Vertical House. Due to the steep hillside, the main living space naturally steps with the grade. The stepped floor creates a nice separation for the living and dining space while maintaining openness and optimizing the view at the back of the house.
Preview of one of two projects coming to Malibu | Perched in Las Flores Canyon and overlooking the ocean, meet the Vertical House. One feature we love is the shallow “cocktail pool” for unwinding and entertaining on hot summer days.
We've been doing a lot of thinking about the new State Law and how it may, or may not, be a part of the housing crisis solution. Check out our blog to find out whether your lot (or your neighbor's lot) can use this new ordinance to build up to 4 housing units on a single-family zoned lot.

A 3D printed house in Austin....and it is really beautiful. Although, the printed walls seem like a very small part of the overall construction. Would be interesting to know how much they impacted the overall budget.

Flashback Friday to show you one of Tracy’s watercolor renderings from when she was in grad school. She says she doesn’t remember the project exactly but it had to with “activating the downtown in front of the capital.” Either way we thought everyone would appreciate some old school hand rendering.
