Instead of a FB live I have a fast speed video of creating mono prints using a gel plate, oil stick and inks. It was pretty cool because since the ink and oil don't mix, I was able to get a lot of beaded ink that created some cool texture. I was limited to indigo, russet, pearl and copper inks which all looked lovely together. I can't wait to use these prints in some mixed media work!
Another reason to be grateful for bees...Bees use beeswax to make their honeycomb which is a natural by-product of the honey-making process. When worker bees produce an excess of beeswax it can be harvested.
This wax is the bulk of the material in encaustic medium which is a painting medium. This medium consists of the bees wax combined with damar resin which is a tree sap that is crystalized. Pigments are added to the encaustic to colorize it.
Lately I have been working with encaustic medium. I love working with encaustic- its consistency- working with melted wax- it has a particular smell that is really good. Because it has to be molten, the warmth actually heats up my studio. I work in layers and get to use a blow torch to fuse each layer down. And the encaustic lends itself to a beautiful depth of color. I add oil paint to the wax to colorize it. And even though it is a more costly medium- I think it is sooo worth it.
The natural aspect of encaustic is also important to me- I am really happy to be working with a more eco friendly medium and reducing my use of chemicals.
What is the best advice you received in 2023?

I had a great time with many of you at the Holiday Art Show and Sale this weekend. Thank you for being there! Here is one painting that I spoke about. It is a large 30 x 40 inch encaustic painting titled "Dreams Larger than Mountains" from the Connections series. The painting explores the concepts of ambition and support. It is telling a story about the human capacity to envision a future that is vast and challenging and speaks to the idea that some dreams can feel insurmountable, like mountains. Yet, with the support and companionship of others, these dreams are not lonely endeavors but shared quests. Having the mountains within the minds of the figures, shows that our dreams are a part of us, influencing our thoughts and actions. As the title suggests,no matter the size of the dreams or the challenges they represent, the bonds we share with others can help us to rise and face them. It is a testament to the power of solidarity and mutual support in the face of challenges.

"Embrace" - the act of holding and being held. It is a universal human experience that transcends specific identity. The simplicity of the embrace stands out as a moment of clarity and solace amongst the patchwork and patterns that can be seen as the complexities and chaos of life.
DM for purchasing details.
This piece is called "Cold Day, Warm Drink" and features two figures standing side by side. Intentionally obscured faces draw attention away from individual identity and towards their shared experience. A muted color palette with soft blues, purples, and earth tones convey a sense of calm and intimacy. Though it is a cold day, the reds and pinks in the background represent the warmth of the interaction- both figures holding cups, a symbol of socializing and sharing. Their posture, leaning towards one another, suggests a close relationship or a moment of shared understanding. The absence of detailed facial expressions allows viewers to project their own emotions and experiences onto the figures, making the piece a mirror to the observer's own social interactions. This piece explores themes of human connection, communication, and the shared experiences that unite us- the universal language of companionship and understanding. This artwork is available. Please DM me if interested.
