Last Monday, Joe Chambers sat on the big blue chair in my living room. We were rehearsing for our upcoming show at McCabe’s, scheduled for Sunday, August 25th. He looked good and sounded even better. Joe hungered to tear it up on stage one more time. He was full of ideas for tours, songs, and arrangements.
Three days later, Joe Chambers died of cancer. The voice that defined The Chambers Brothers for over four decades was stilled.
Joe was a musical prophet who plugged gospel and blues into the hot socket of west coast psychedelia. His song, Time Has Come Today is a building block of our universe. It has not been off the airwaves since it was released in 1967. Joe was always moving forward. I know he loved playing with The Ash Grove Alumni. He told me that the record we had just completed was the best he had ever made.
Playing with Joe was like getting a shot of joy. He was our oxygen. We called him the Lion because of his strength and fearlessness. He was iron willed and always ready to take a risk on stage. He was a huge part of my musical education and my life. We will take the stage Sunday and try to tear it up- but the Lion is gone.
Helping us to remember Joe, will be his big sister Jewell and her son Jerry- a gifted singer who has performed with the Chambers Brothers. The legendary Wendy Waldman will be there with her brilliant son, Abraham. Don Kirkpatrick will soar on guitar, Taras Prodaniuk will demonstrate his mastery on the bass. Scotty Babcock will shape the groove and David Horne will delight with his percussion and jug. And maybe if we are lucky- we will hear the echo of the Lion’s roar. His memory will be a blessing on us all.
Wow!!! Norm teasing us with a few acts that will be playing on Sunday Sept 8th at the Write Off Room!!! presents a concert for The Midnight Mission hosted by with special guest , , and Jason Sinay!!! There are more artist that we will announce on Sept 2nd when the tickets go on sale!!! All ticket sales go directly to the Midnight Mission to help LA's homeless, Norm's favorite charity!!!
Norm called in some favors from a lot of his famous friends to do this show. It’s going to be unbelievable. We cannot announce who’s playing until September 2nd, only 200 tickets will be available. Sept 2nd will be the day we will announce who’s playing, and tickets will be available that day! More information coming soon, look out for this, you won’t want to miss it! 🔥🔥🔥
