Love Machines is the hopeful condition - that through and with ever-changing media we may join together in generosity. Love Machines is the foreclosed command - to operationalize the self and accept technology as the answer.
In the presence of this double, Love Machines looks to make sense of these conflicting desires that permeate contemporary techno-culture. From performances to simulation, the works in this show by the 2024 UCLA DMA MFA cohort both embrace the new relations fostered by media arts, and call into question the black-boxed reality that is formed from these same technologies.
As the love of machines swells to consume, this show looks toward the love machine, that which turns in mutual care, as a new mode to understand our present.
The UCLA Game Lab stands in solidarity with our students' right to peacefully protest, as enshrined in the fundamental principles of free speech and expression. We believe that fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are heard and respected is paramount to our educational mission. At the UCLA Game Lab, we value the power of dialogue, critical thinking, and activism in shaping a more just and equitable society. We encourage open discussions and constructive engagement with our community to address systemic issues and strive for positive change.
The arrests and the violence towards UCLA students and faculty participating in the protest in support of Palestine that took place this week are deeply upsetting to us. We assert that peaceful protest is a fundamental right, and any actions that suppress or infringe upon this right must be scrutinized and addressed.
We are appalled with UCLA’s failure to protect our students against the violence of the counter protestors and the police. We stand with our students and faculty in their pursuit of social justice and will continue to support their right to peaceful protest.
In light of the events of the past week at UCLA, we are postponing the Everest Pipkin lecture for a later date. When we decide to reschedule we will announce the new lecture date through our social media and email lists. Thank you for your interest, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

We spoke to TC Zhou about his experimental q***r games that explore q***r life. These games are browser-based and are based on TC Zhou's interest in combining generative art with computer game design. TC Zhou's games draw on his own experiences as a gay person and have covered topics such as gay liberation, s*x education, destigmatization, q***r temporality, the human s*xuality spectrum, the search for love, and the allocation of time for life. “Awakening” by Yolanda Xing at the UCLA Design Media Arts undergraduate exhibition “Save as…” 💾🦋 “Awakening” is an immersive 3D game that casts players in the ongoing saga of Dylan, a cyborg character living in a never-ending digital reality. It presents the digital realm as a voyeuristic window into Dylan's life, while the gallery space becomes a passing scene, often given fleeting attention and little more than a backdrop for selfies. The continuous cycle of Dylan's death becomes both meaningless and empathetic, reflecting the transitory nature of engagement in both spaces.
Nahla Quazi’s game “Desire” at the UCLA Design Media Arts undergraduate exhibition “Save as…”💾🦋“Desire” is a dating simulation exploring as*xuality and its isolating nature.
The last meet up was so fun!
