• Thoughts may not always reflect reality and they are merely fleeting moments in our minds. Remember to take time for your mind and be patient when those moments arrive as they are just thoughts that don’t define who we are.

• Welcome to the One Book, One College Student Project Showcase 2024!
All of these art works and written papers were created by students taking LAVC courses and were inspired by this year’s One Book, One College (OBOC) book, The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande. Grande’s memoir is about a very poor Mexican family that immigrated to the United States for a better life. Once here in Los Angeles, they faced new challenges of fitting in and succeeding in America while never forgetting the home they left behind. These artworks and papers discuss students’ personal immigration stories or the important value of the immigrant workforce in the American economy.
This is the 7th OBOC Student Project Showcase. This year it is a Virtual Exhibition visible online to allow students, their families, and the wider community view and appreciate the many talents of our students.
I want to thank all the students and professors who read, discussed, and created work related to The Distance Between Us. Your images and words remind us of the challenging journeys we and our families have made to get here. I also wish to thank Professor Jenene Nagy and the Art Department Art Gallery for hosting this culminating event. Thank you to all who have supported the One Book, One College program and the importance of reading.
Sincerely,
Alicia Bien
