Lafayette Square Treasure Restored
The home at 1615 South Victoria Avenue in Lafayette Square has a storied history of previous owners including the first African American family to move into the community after housing covenants restricting ownership by African Americans were overturned.
The home was built in 1939 for Anthony (formerly Antonio) J. Dibetta and Perina Pistonetto Dibetta, an Italian immigrant and wine merchant, explained Traci Bates, a neighbor who is also the realtor on the sale of the house along with her partner Lorna Hennington.
Bates and Hennington stewarded the rehabilitation of the home through a partnership with Zoom Casa enabled by their brokerage firm Keller Williams and were careful to leave historical elements of the house intact, like a wine rack in the basement they think was installed by the Dibettas.
Dr. Geralidine Branch, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, lived in the home until her passing in 2016 at the age of 108. Dr. Branch, was one of the first African American women physicians with a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) to practice in Los Angeles. She founded Watts Health Center in 1965 following the Watts riots and helped establish the Chares R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles.
Bates and Hennington preserved the whimsical monkey mural Branch had painted in the family room of the home. They hired a muralist to extend the edges of the mural when they decided to connect the living and family rooms by removing a wall.
Throughout the rehabilitation process, Bates and Hennington told us they prefer to use the term rehabilitation to renovation, they tried to preserve details unique to the house that they thought would appeal to a new owner.
βEveryone wants a butlerβs panty now,β Hennigton told the Buzz. So instead of tearing out walls in the kitchen to make one giant space, they opted to keep the butlerβs pantry.
