You likely heard that Rubio’s Coastal Grill, home of the award-winning Original Fish Taco®, filed for Chapter 11 restructuring today. You likely have many questions.

Let us assure you that Rubio’s is definitely still in business and serving the same great food at 86 locations in California, Arizona and Nevada – and will be for a long time. Co-founder Ralph Rubio, the iconic face and guiding force behind the company’s popular menu items, will continue with the company and will provide his usual inspiration and energy going forward.

The filing was done to right-size the company to better thrive in today’s retail environment.

Like the restaurant industry overall, Rubio’s has been negatively affected over the past few years by diminishing in-store traffic attributable to work-from-home practices remaining in place, and by rising food and utility costs that, combined with significant increases to the minimum wage in California, put pressure on a number of its locations.

To ensure the future viability of Rubio’s, we had to close 48 underperforming locations in California -- 13 in the San Diego area, 24 in the Los Angeles area and 11 in northern California.

Making the decision to close a store is never an easy one. While painful, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic long-term plan to position Rubio’s for success for years to come. The closings were brought about by the rising cost of doing business in California.

Rest assured that the same delicious food Rubio’s has been serving up for 41 years will be here for the long haul.
