Improve patients' chronic disease management through an innovative value based Home Care program.

Stelara for IBD is now approved by the FDA

This week the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves use of ustekinumab (Stelara, Janssen) for the use in treatment of Crohn's disease patients who are moderate to severely active.

Stelara is used for patients who have previously failed or non-responsive to immunomodulator or corticosteroid therapy, but have not failed treatment with a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. For the mechanism of action, Stelara is is the first biologic therapy that targets Interleukin-12/23 cytokines, and aims to disrupt those signaling cascades which lead to inflammatory and immune responses.

Please discuss treatment options with your GI physician for further questions.

We are in the final steps of finalizing this unique option within our "UCLAeIBD" app available in all apple and android app stores. Keep an eye out for the first release!

Spread the awareness & education, March is Awareness Month. What is colorectal cancer exactly?

Colorectal cancer is cancer that starts in the colon or re**um. The colon and the re**um are parts of the large intestine, which is the lower part of the body’s digestive system. During digestion, food moves through the stomach and small intestine into the colon. The colon absorbs water and nutrients from the food and stores waste matter (stool). Stool moves from the colon into the re**um before it leaves the body.

Most colorectal cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids). Colorectal cancer often begins as a growth called a polyp, which may form on the inner wall of the colon or re**um. Some polyps become cancer over time. Finding and removing polyps can prevent colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in men and women in the United States. Deaths from colorectal cancer have decreased with the use of colonoscopies and f***l occult blood tests, which check for blood in the stool. National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Olive Oil 02/04/2016

Beautiful video about the health promoting effects of the Mediterranean Diet and olive oil with UCLA Health very own Emeran A. Mayer, MD, PhD.

There is strong epidemiological evidence supporting the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet for the prevention of a variety of diseases, ranging from cardiovascular disease, cancer and even degenerative diseases of the brain. The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a high proportion of fruits, vegetables and nuts, a low proportion of red meat and a near absence of animal fats. In addition to the high fiber and low fat content, an important component of the Mediterranean diet are so called polyphenols or antioxidants contained in olive oil and red wine.

Emeran A. Mayer, MD, PhD, director of the Gail and Gerald Oppenheimer Family Center for Neurobiology of Stress, has a strong interest in the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the gut brain interactions in health and disease.
He has collaborated with Marco Cavalieri, a well-known producer of extra virgin olive oil in the Marche region of Italy, where olives are harvested from 800 year old trees.
Cavalieri and Mayer discussed the topic of olive oil and health at a recent event organized by the Azzura Foundation in West Los Angeles.
